This album sounds a bit different from the All Stars' debut. It's not its style, though: everything is still there, from the subtly understated percussion to the stabbing, polished horn section. This is a conceptually different album - and some of the conceptual difference is carried over into its sound. There are a couple of songs that feel far detached from the 50s tradition the All Stars are thought to emulate, especially so when the lyrics are considered (the title track being the album's finest example). Also, the varety of styles on the recording is a little out of sync - you'll hear a bolero, a splendid piece of Afro-Cuban jazz, and even a son in the finest tradition of Compay Segundo. When the lights came up in the cinema where we saw Wim Wenders' movie of the same name, we saw grown adults weeping. This is more than a band, it is a musical phenomenon. Such a synergy is rare in this day and age, and the vibe on this album is just fantastic. Buy it and weep, because you have missed your chance to ever see or hear Ruben Gonzales, Compay Segundo or Ibrahim Ferrer playing live with the band again, but the remaining members still tour and the band is organic, progressing through the years with younger, equally talented musicians, so if you see a gig advertised and can get to it, don't miss it! This album has changed many lives...

He has a blinding technique, which at times can get in the way of the music, but not, in the main, on this album. In particular, Promenade, an original composition, is hauntingly beautiful and restrained almost to the point of sparseness driven on by a sympathetic bassline and Here's That Rainy Day is similarly delicate. Other tracks, like a breakneck Caravan, show off Gonzalo's technique and display his Cuban roots. If you've never heard this wonderful Jazz/Cuban pianist, this is a great place to start. He's wonderful live too - catch him if you can
