The world outside Cuba discovered Ibrahim Ferrer's soft, smoky vocals through the release of the Grammy-winning "Bueno Vista Social Club" released on the World Circuit/Nonesuch label. Ferrer sang four of the 12 non-instrumental tunes on the album. With Ry Cooder, he later recorded two further CD's for the label (in 1999 and 2003, respectively.)

Ibrahim Ferrer's favourite musical form was the "bolero." In 2005, he set out to record an album featuring only such pieces. Ferrer died in August 2005 before having completed the project.
However, he left behind high-quality demos, which received some posthumous instrumental overdubbing. Together with the beautiful "Melodía del Río", a 1998 track produced by Ry Cooder, these ... Read More:

The comparisaon with Joni is based on the fact that Joyce is a fantastic singer songwiter, and also a master of her instrument, the guitar, and like Joni music seems to flow from her effortlessly. Musically they're really very different. Joyce has that trademark Brazilian sunshine in her voice and music, whilst Joni has that bleak melancholy Blue, perhaps attributable to her roots in Canada. Anyway enough topographical speculation.

This best of from the London based Mr Bongo label covers the '70-'96 period, starting with her youthful work (with touches of Tropicalia in the production values), and reaching up to her more recent mature sound (from track 5 onwards, Historia Do Samba, she's heard in her signature style, and she's still recording, ... This album is the quintessential dinner jazz album. Forget all those lame Best of Jazz compilations. Jobim's original Bossa Nova tracks are the only option for the smoothest, most elegant and sensual songs that everyone in the room can kick back to.

CD1 opens with Pete Roderiguez' tight Latin soul mover 'I like it like that' and closes with the now infamous Mambo No. 5 in its original trumpet-piano beauty. Whilst not everyone will know it by name the popular Latin classic 'Oya Coma Va' (Santana's version) opens CD2. Whilst under the heading Latin this superb compilation manages to include everything from Latin samba to 1990's Latin house, the later of which concludes CD2 in the quite masterful 'Guallando' by Fulanito with its heavy basslines and incredible accordion sound. The songs in-between are hardly fillers either with an emphasis placed on big names and popular tunes (such as the Cuban 'Guantanamera'), as well as the odd rare gem. This is the perfect introduction to anyone looking to take their ... Read More:

This has to be Stan Getz at his best. You would be hard-pressed to hear the Tenor Saxophone play this smoothly and with such effortless feeling anywhere else. I can't think of another Jazz Sax player who could have made this album. It is a classic. The lyrical input from Astrud Gilberto and sensuous arrangements by Joau make this album something special. A must-have for all Jazz sax fans.

This is possibly Horace Silver's best front line. Certainly he seems to have thought so and with good reason. Both the ensemble playing and the solos are sharp, in keeping with the tunes. In comparison to Horace Silver's earlier and later groups I much prefer Blue Mitchell to Kenny Dorham and Junior Cook to Joe Henderson, not forgettting Louis Hayes. Each seem to me to understand instinctively where Horace Silver is coming from, let alone where he is going. Last but no tleast, I can't honestly say I prefer any one track over the others but the Blowin' The Blues Away does it for me every time. Enjoy...
