A stunning showcase of Hubbard's talents. For someone so young this serves as an excellent taste of what he was to become. His ranging, harmonic and sometimes downright belligerant style has always entranced me. For me this is his greatest record as a leader, the younster setting out to show eveyone what he has to offer. This record is littered with those characteristic barnstorming solos and his ability of more subtle playing on,"But Beautiful." There's a bit of everything on this from the skipping, jumpy, Horace Silveresque,"Gypsy Blue," to the classy sophisticated,"One mint Julep." Tina Brook's title track really swings. Brook's career disappeared into nothing beacause of his heroin addiction, this record shows what a wasted talent he was ... Read More:

Maria Toledo's hum-sung version of the main theme is so exquisite, it is worth the price of the CD alone. But there are other treasures on this disk, such as Luiz Bonfa's magical solo guitar playing on Samba de Orfeo, the hymnal A Felicidade and so on. Don't be put off by the precussive drum track that begins the album!

53.World Tour by: Joe Zawinul

Music : World Tour
Having found all of Zawinul's post-Weather Report albums a bit lukewarm & sterile I was overjoyed when I heard "World Tour". This is exactly how the Zawinul Syndicate is supposed to sound: pieces like "Slivovitz Trail" and "Bimoya" were made for this kind of groove-driven funkin' performance.
Just take "Bimoya" and the fabulous "N'Awlins" from disc one and you'll have a set of songs that won't be surpassed by any jazz-funk you'll ever hear. Add "Patriots", "Indiscretions", "Slivovitz Trail" and "Two Lines" and you'll have a ready-made best-of-jazz-funk album. (To be honest, "Two Lines" is the only track on this album that sounded better in the studio version, but the live version here is still good enough to deserve its place.) In fact, there's ... Elis Regina is very possibly the best brazilian MPB singer ever and she proves it here.
But her voice and choice of songs also show her up as much more than that. Because she ventures into risky territory at the time (mostly the 60s and the 70s) in Brazil under a military dictatorship with the ensuing censorship...
She ventures into rock, folk, psychadelism, protest song.
Always remaining true to herself: "this world is just a passage, a place for us to learn - it would make no sense otherwise"

55.Jazz Samba: Remastered by: Stan Getz

Music : Jazz Samba: Remastered
Jazz Samba is the first, but now possibly least famous, of the works by the famous samba populist and saxophonist, Stan Getz. Here he collaborates with the guitarist Charlie Byrd to produce, in my opinion, his finest Samba album.

Unlike the later Getz/Gilberto, Getz/Byrd has no vocal content and relies on swinging samba melodies and dexterous interplay between these masters of jazz sax and guitar. In tempo, it ranges from the boisterous E Luxo So, through the never-bettered Desafinado to the melancholic and beautiful Samba Triste.

Getz's samba does not engage the listener like other jazz forms. Its Brazilian rhythms fade naturally into the background, making it ideal for sophisticated party music. Given the right conditions however (a sultry ... Read More:

It's easy to be over-critical on albums. Yeah, the damn language barrier means I miss out on any lyrical brilliance &, yeah, this isn't varied enough & has a fairly throwaway instrumental track, yet there's something so subtly glorious about hearing João Gilberto every so often (both the person & the album). Just a man, his guitar & the most delicate of percussive backdrops. Sometimes bores me, other times makes me wonder why I bother listening to any other artists; always great background music if nothing else, and I mean that in the most sincere way possible.

As a side note, I've heard many people say that this is the absolute, ultimate, completely flawless classic in bossa nova, so perhaps you should go with them instead. I dunno, I just ... Read More:

I bought the original album on cd about 4 years ago. I bought it after hearing Bebel sing 'Samba e Amor' on 'Later With Jools Holland.' Rarely do I buy albums on the basis of one song but it was one of my most treasured albums...Until a friend lost it. That caused me to replace it, this time with the double cd edition with the remixes. For me, the original set of songs still shines through. Every song has something that, in time will grow on you,(if you don't appreciate it initially) though when Bebel sings in English, I feel some of that passion is lost. Having said that, 'August Day Song' is still a little gem and 'Close Your Eyes' gets the booty shaking. As far as the remixes go, the Buffalo bunch version of 'Close Your Eyes' could satisfy funky house lovers ... Read More:

This CD should be referenced onto a sister recording by Stan Getz: Jazz Samba (the original work). Basically, this recording is more of the same - but better in my opinion.

There is still the excellent rich Sax work of Getz and the great Guitar work of Bonfa. Also included this time are some equally impressive Latin American vocals on some tracks. Note that the vocalist is probably not Astrid Gilberto.

I liked this CD for the warmth of the bass and the utter smoothness of the Sax. The guitar work is good too.

The vocal tracks make a change from the totally instrumental Jazz Samba recording, breaking up the recording.

On a technical note there is minimal production content( as recorded circa 1963)- which means you can actuall ... Read More:

I cannot add any more superlatives to the ones that have already been given to this Grammy-winning album. It is a release that never falters; every cut is worthy of inclusion.

Being a forty-year fan of Sergio Mendes has given me a slightly bent bias toward him and everything that he has done. The current crop of popular Latin artists needs to give credit to this trailblazer and master musician.

I'm glad that new musicians, like Will.i.am are discovering Mendes's sound and bringing him again to the masses.
