This is one of my all time favourite albums. Great for the car and one I always love to listen to. His music is timeless and as cool as if it were just written. You have probably heard most of these numbers anyway on the radio from time to time. Fantastic too for a romantic evening in with someone.

The Beginners Guide series is garnering a reputation for collecting quality tunes in a triple CD set...and BGT Cuba is no exception. The three CDs each cover a different style... CD1 "Classic Cuba' has all the Buena Vista style artists: Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer, Cunbanismo etc. and there are a few classic tunes that many will know from other sources, but the quality bar is high, with most tunes displaying the easy languid grooves and harmonies we have come to know and love. *** CD2 "Jazzy Cuba' ...says it all...the cuban grooves being a little more subservient to solos and spotlights on individual talents...still exuberant and danceable, but perhaps less of interest to DJs. Dizzy Gillespie's style was the nemesis of Miles Davis's. Introspection doesn't seem to have been a word often used in Diz's vocabulary, musical or otherwise. His playing did have a 'dizzying' effect always putting speed, dynamism and drama at the forefront of his performances. On this collection Gillespie's talent as a bandleader and musical arranger also come to the fore. He had of course a great theoretical knowledge of music and wasn't afraid to pass this on to other musicians by way of help and encouragement. Yo-Yo Ma performs Appassionato with superb technique, and the music on this album is sublime, mystical, sensual, optimistic, gentle and powerful at the same time. A real treat for those who seek an emotional challenge and a profound artistic experience. The more I listen to this CD the more I am astonished by the great selection of the music. It's always such a strong moment when the Cello meets the Oboe in "Gabriel's Oboe" (The Mission) and how they reach for each other and rise together into the most mesmerizing interaction - one is transported to a world of beautiful feelings by this music and how it is played here.

I first heard this album as an LP in my Dad's record collection, and I've been unable to get the tunes out my head ever since. I don't know much about jazz, and only have a bit of modern stuff in my collection, but this album is so mellow and melting, it's unbelievable. Think of a gin and tonic or a glass of soft red at the end of a long hard day, the fire roaring in a cosy room, good company, and this is the missing piece. Fantastically relaxing....

'Boca E Boca' is one the the highlights of this experience as it was only released in 1976 on Nana Caymmi's treat 'Renascer' with Nana's father Dorival singing Milton's vocal part....get that album as well by the way as it's for life!
