I like much of Pat Metheny's music and have many of his albums but if I had to select one as a favourite, then this is it. It has great melodies, great improvisation and a generally upbeat and happy feel. It's one of the few "Jazz" albums you can put on in mixed company and get appreciative comments. There's no duff tracks nor any to break the mood, and it doesnt resort to blandness or cliches. One for the desert island, especially if there's a great bunch of friends and a barbie going!

This is anincredibly fun party album. The music is Mambo and you've already heard a lot of it. 'Patricia' in the Royal Mail 'I saw this and thought of you' ad, as well as 'Guaglione' and 'Mambo No 5' from the Guinness ads.

This stands on its own as a premier example of Mambo swing music.

By the greatest of hazards, I came across Mr W. Nayland's review of the CD titled "Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour." In my opinion, this album is, arguably, the definite overview of the Verve recordings from Ms Astrud Gilbero, contrary to what Mr W. Nayland might say. And, no, Mr W. Nayland, this album is NOT titled "The Best Of Astrud Gilberto" either.
This CD is a twenty song strong collection of Ms Astrud Gilberto's classic blend of pop, samba and jazz recordings for the Verve label. It includes really the cream of her Verve recordings, spanning the period 1963-1969 (plus one track recorded with James Last in 1986). The insert provides details of the recording dates and a list of the musicians for each track. The liner notes are quite ... Read More:

This Cd contains a wealth of Shearing magic.
If you want to chill out or just wantsome real "Dinner Jazz" for that special meal, then this is it!

Listen to "Laura" or "There's a Small Hotel" they are superb.

The Billy May arrangements contribute greatly and George Shearing's own are subtle.

Spoil yourself - you won't regret it.

Only discovered this fabulous album by accident, after investing next-to-nothing in a copy of the double LP found in a charity shop. I'm neither a world-music buff nor a particular fan of Brazilian music, and only gave it a spin out of curiosity. One play was enough to make me realise that it's a very special record.

The album is credited as being a Milton Nascimento/Lo Borges collaboration, who share most of the lead vocals, but others help out on the songwriting. The overall result is a very eclectic mix of Brazilian music with Beatlesish pop/rock influences. Some of the songs are very sombre and downbeat ("Cais", "Dos Cruces", "Os Povos"), others so incredibly joyful and uplifting that they will literally cleanse your soul. Sounds ... Read More:

I loved "Spain", but had thought that the jazz-flamenco fusion in "Spain again" would only repeat the first. However, this is a new genre with huge potential for change and innovation, as "Spain again" shows. This time Tomatito and Camilo (joined Juan Luis Guerra) have taken Argentinean Tango, plus jazz and flamenco standards, and given them the fusion treatment. The result is an exhilarating, yet sensitive flamenco jazz. It leaves me crying out for more.
