I remember seeing Crosby Stills Nash and Young live at Wembly stadium, way back in the early 1970s, and being knocked out by Neil's guitar playing and with his ability to strike up a rapport with the other band members. This superb live album catapults me back to those heady days. Long drawn out guitar solos can be as dull as ditch water in the hands of lesser men, but here, Neil Young and Crazy Horse explore and interact musically in a way that is simply inspirational. The timing, dynamics and phrasing of the pre-grunge guitar work are enough to make other guitarists weep with envy.

But this is not just a guitar driven album: in this record Neil Young testifies to the fact that he is a songwriter of immense stature, capable ... Read More:

If, like me, you prefer albums to yield surprises and discoveries, then this career retrospective of the singer-songwriter Jimmy Webb is one for you. Webb is best known for the classic songs he penned for others (Wichita Lineman, McArthur Park, Up Up And Away, By The Time I Get To Phoenix to name but a few) - but here his work as a solo performer and singer-songwriter in the 1970s is celebrated. Although he never really broke through in the same way as James Taylor and Elton John, his work is the equal of their output - if not better. And the real joy in this collection - for me - was hearing a lot of this material for the first time.
His voice is uncertain, but distinctive. His songs often heartbreaking, but with humour and dignity. ... Read More:

'Idioteque' is a fantastic example of how Radiohead remain an exciting live band, dispite the band's change of direction, from using traditional instruments, to fiddling with sequencers, drum machines and samplers.
I for one really enjoy this CD - it practically lives in my 6-CD changer, where those above and below it are constantly replaced. You can look everywhere for Radiohead gigs, but here we have 8 tracks of the band at their progressive best.

More than Grace, more than any of the other live albums, it is this record that shows to me why the loss of Jeff Buckley was so tragic.

In Live at sin e, Jeff stands in a small cafe, feet from the few punters lucky enough to squeeze in. The sound engineer had to tell him they weren't recording to ease his nerves. Sony execs were in Limos outside having signed him based on similar sessions just months before.

This album is a showcase for Jeff's incredible voice and musicianship, testified by the eclectic repetoire on show. It is also a testament to his great sense of humour, with jokey monologues breaking up the tracks, a polar opposite to the quiet deppresive he is sometimes portrayed as.

A selection of the finest moments:

137.Live and Acoustic at Park Avenue by: Snow Patrol

Music : Live and Acoustic at Park Avenue
Certain EPs can be found mainly in indie music stores, and few other places -- usually crammed with live performances.

One such tiny store is where I stumbled across Snow Patrol's "Live and Acoustic in Park Ave.," a charming little EP that shows off Snow Patrol's skills in a less rock-oriented, more folky kind of sound. Though only a few songs long, it shows that these guys have real talent.

"Hello everybody. How've you been?" Gary Lightbody asks, and gets some cheers and applause. Then he launches into a pleasantly pensive acoustic version of "Spitting Games," marred only by his tendency to start humming "mmmm-hmmmmm" between verses.

He follows it up with the rather more simplistic "How to Be Dead," the charming ballad "Grazed ... Read More:

It's a great double album (showing my age I know). Taken off the Deceptive Bends tour who knew 10CC could continue minus half the Strawberry Studios foursome.

When Godley & Creme left everyone thought the cc's were done. However not only did Gouldman & Stewart come up with the great DB album they also left us this great live performance(s). And then came Bloody Tourists, stunning. Alas after that things went downhill. Far better IMHO than the King Biscuit Flower Hour cd of the "original 10". Also miles ahead of the Alive cd done in the 90s when they weren't quite yet a nostalgic pub band.

Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

This album is flawlessly played, it is beautifully produced with crystal clear sound and it is a fine overview of Japan's impressive body of work. But it has absolutely no atmosphere: do not buy this expecting to hear any jolly rapport with the audience for not a single syllable is uttered by any member of the band throughout (not even a thank you, let alone a name check of the band members). The first and last tracks are studio instrumentals but the other songs, familiar to any good Japan fan, are near-perfect carbon copies of the original studio recordings. This does not "feel" like a live album at all, despite the cheers after most tracks (some clever sound editor thought it sounded better to omit even those from the end of the later tracks)and is best regarded as a greatest hits ...
