B.B. King is very fond of getting together with old friends and this album from 1997 does the business as does his later contribution for his 80th birthday a couple of years back. I was drawn to the album when I first heard on radio his opener with Van Morrison of, "If You Love Me" from Van's Healing Game album, also 1997. I think this is a better version of a lovely smooth orchestral blues with Van singing and B.B. inevitably playing excellent guitar. Tracey Chapman accompanies B.B. for "The Thrill is Gone" where the combined sound is powerful. These openers set the scene for the rest of the album which is very enjoyable and of a high quality throughout.

Those good people at Ace are still making available more and more gems from BB King's extensive back catalogue, and continually finding better quality masters and using more sophisticated techniques for improving the sound. Inevitably this means some duplication between compilations; for example some of the titles here also appear on other Ace compilations of the period such as My Sweet Little Angel and He's Dynamite.
The title of this collection is self-explanatory, with 20 A-sides and 6 B-sides or AA-sides, some of which made the US R&B charts in their own right, from a period in BB King's lengthy career when he was at a creative peak, continually touring and recording along the way, in Memphis, Houston, Little Rock, Cincinnati, Los Angeles ... Not out and out blues, more like bluesy soul or somehwere in between. Wherever it is, it's excellent. "Shoes" is my all-time favourite Bobby Bland track. If I was gonnae be picky I would have added "Poverty" and "Getting Used to the Blues" to this compilation but then again my taste is more soulful than bluesy......If you like BB King (his old mate) then buy this too !
