I've been led to understand that this album was recorded as part of a plan to 'cash in' on the chart success if 'The Thrill is Gone', but it is one of those wonders of popular music that manages to transcend any genre or classification.
From the tongue in cheek introductiion to the hairs-on-back-of-neck-raising finale, the flawless production somehow allows the soul/jazz backing to showcase King's guitar playing better than any of the more traditional recordings. The guitar playng on 'King's Special' is, I would argue, some of the greatest 'feel' playing ever committed to record. If you like what Peter Green did in his Fleetwood Mac days, you will absolutely love this album.
There is also a faintly surreal quality to the album: You ... Read More:

Music : Live and Cookin': at Alice's Revisited
This album should be as easily available as any live blues record...it is certainly better than most of them.
"Live & Cookin' At Alice's Revisited" features Howlin' Wolf backed by his powerful early-70s combo, the Wolf Gang, which included guitarists Hubert Sumlin and L.V. Williams, bassist Dave Myers, drummer extraordinaire Fred Below, legendary piano player Sunnyland Slim, and saxist Eddie Shaw.

Wolf himself was in his early sixties at the time this recording was made, and starting to suffer from ill health, but he could still rise to his former heights when it came to winning over an audience.
This album was originally issued on LP in 1972, and featured eight songs. Two excellent bonus tracks were added when it was ... Read More:

This is the second of two albums featuring Chess artists brought together in the studio to perform informal jams. Here, Howlin' Wolf replaces Little Walter in the line-up, while Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley keep sitting in.

As can be guessed by looking at the "psychedelic" cover, this album was - at the time - a pure marketing ploy to catch the attention of a younger, white audience. Moreover, is it purely coincidental to see Bo Diddley having a go at the wah-wah pedal? You bet!

I am a great fan of, among others, blues music and psychedelic rock. As such, I will say that - in my humble opinion - this album is a complete mess. One really senses that the stars feel ill at ease in this project. Despite the presence ... Read More:

This album is a masterpiece and deserves much greater acclamation. It captures B.B. King's guitar playing at its finest and cements his position as a guitaring legend to anyone in doubt. The sensational playing in this album defines the concept of 'soulful' playing.

To my disappoint, I usually find that B.B. King's albums are drowning in backing orchestration, with too much percussion and too many brass instruments. The arrangements in this album however, are much simpler and the lack of backing instruments allows B.B. King's guitar playing and epic singing to dominate. A simplified approach gives a record a much more soulful feel, which is much more suiting than the usual jovial big-band sound which I find inappropriate for the genre ... Read More:
