Firstly, I agree with other reviewers. What was the basis for the selection of tracks? Why no "My Cherie Amour? Is there something that we don't know about the ex-PM's wife? However, the main problem with this compilation is that it charts Stevie's downfall from leader to follower. OK, some of it is subjective, but I'm sure I'm not the only person to find "You are the sunshine of my life" beautiful, but "I just called to say I love you" corny. Come on, a drum machine and a cha-cha-cha ending is for a Holiday Inn bar performer. Equally, Part-time Lover seems to based on You Can't Hurry Love's backing track. Marvin Gaye might have had the crooning talents to do Overjoyed, but Stevie should avoid crooning. Compare Skeletons ... Read More:

I agree with what reviewers have said so far. This is not as good as Talking Book, Innervisions, Fulfillingness or Songs In The Key. It is quite a good introduction to the classic Stevie sound though and the listener can see how Stevie developed that trademark sound over the next 4 or 5 albums. I would say it is better than Where I'm Coming From and the 60s Motown period is nicely summerised on several compilations albums, so this is the first truly great Stevie solo album. My faves are 'Superwoman', 'Happier Than The Morning Sun', 'Keep On Running' and even 'Evil', though it is very cheesy, I like a bit of that sometimes!. A big well done to Richard Searling for this fantastic collection.From the very first track Gladys Knight"s brilliant "Here are the pieces of my broken heart" It doesn"t let up just one great track after another.Any one of these tracks could have been a top 5 hit.As well as motown legends like Marvin,Stevie and the Temptations it contains tracks from sadly underated artists like Brenda Holloway,Chris Clark and Barbara McNair.At last these tracks have been realesed from the vaults after all these years. The first CD covers the music of the Supremes, with and without Diana, while the second CD covers Diana's solo career up to the time that she left Motown in 1981. Of the Supremes tracks, eighteen were recorded with Diana. I'm pleased to see My world is empty without you (one of their finest songs) included despite the fact that it completely missed the UK charts. Come see about me, Back in my arms again and I hear a symphony are also here despite only being minor UK hits - however, all three were American number one hits. Often, when listening to Marvin, I get a lump in my throat. This is knowing how he spent his last few years, and how his life was eventually ended. However, it's also the fragility of his voice. By this I don't mean his voice wasn't strong or good. However some songs, including many on this album, display a vulnerability. Dusty was the same - some of her ballads displayed the same fragility and vulnerability. Sadly, Johnny Cash's last recordings were the same, but for different reasons. All were and are (on record, anyway) great artists, and deserve all their accolades.

I decided to take a walk in the past and buy this collection - it's superb. It's sing-a-long as every track is well known, well remembered. None of it has dated, none of it. The voices are superb, blending so perfectly on every track. My only complaint, it isn't long enough but then the CD player will keep repeating it until I stop it, so that isn't too much of a problem... It's sunshine music. It's memories and good listening, it's sing-a-long and listenable, it's every cliché in the book and then some. Buy it.

This box-set is on a par with the 1965,1966,1967 complete singles collections.these remasters sound amazing,the songs are 'fab and the playing from the "funk brothers" is superb throughout. i urge you to check these cd's out!
