One of only two albums I have ever purchased by Stevie Wonder - the other being his best-selling 'Hotter Than July' from 1981.

When I first heard the dreamy 'Overjoyed' hit from 1986 - I was sold and simply had to have the album it was taken from. I also purchased the 12" extended single version and played it to death! This beautiful song will forever remind me of the Spring of 1986. Though often liking Stevie's single material, I was never tempted to purchase an album of his until this release. This also includes the top five smash from the previous year: 'Part-Time Lover'. Some of Stevie's songs do tend to go on a bit, but there are some great numbers here like the lovely 'epic': 'Whereabouts' which has 'echoes' ... Read More:

It should really be called The Uncollected and a few which have been.
The only way you even know some of these songs is if you buy this album.
The Essential...should include Twistin' Postman,Beechwood 45789,Playboy,Too many fish in the sea for starters.
This last named was to my mind their finest hour-it was beautifully copied note for note by Nella Dodds on the Wand label as A Girl's Life.
Which happens to be the title of the CD of her complete works

Gladys Knight and the Pips made some records before they signed to Motown, but those records were not successful, so these are the earliest important recordings.

I heard it through the grapevine was their first major hit, going to number two in the American pop chart (and topping the R+B chart) and also giving them a minor British hit. Gladys recorded the song at around the same time as Marvin Gaye, but Motown originally selected the version by Gladys and the Pips for single release. Marvin’s version was released as a single a year later and topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. The two versions are very different despite both being produced by Norman Whitfield. He obviously loved the song as he also produced versions by the ... Read More:

Jimmy Ruffin’s brother David was a member of the Temptations, so talent was obviously in the blood. However, Jimmy was somewhat fortunate to hit big with What becomes of the broken hearted. Diana Ross and the Supremes had recorded it and their version was intended for release as a single. Jimmy heard their version soon after it was recorded and begged Motown to let him record it, and to hold the Supremes version until they heard his. The rest is history. The original Supremes version, which is excellent and would have been a huge hit for them, appeared on one of their albums, but Jimmy’s version, which is even better, was released as a single and became a huge hit in Britain, America and elsewhere.

The Supremes could afford to lose the ... Read More:

We have been seduced and captivated by the sensational duets by Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye. Sadly, Tammi by herself does not live up to the magic of those. A pleasant album, but with nothing outstanding and marred by her tendency to slide around the true note, rather than hitting it. An album best left for the devotee.

So what's this all about-Motown spending huge amounts of money then shovelling the results into the vaults where it would remain for 40 years!
How do these "experts" know what the public will buy? After all it was only through the Beatles that TM took off in the U K.
It must have made the artists wonder what they'd done wrong!
Especially Gladys Knight who was already seeing all her Fury and Vee Jay things reissued on LP.Then TM issue her cover of The Nitty Gritty-hardly essential really as Shirley Ellis had cornered the market with this one.
Interesting though the way T M covered their own songs with their own artists but through the years the CD Age has seen a mass amount of the music using any excuse to reissue it and then repeating ... Read More:

77.Diana & Marvin by: Diana Ross Marvin Gaye

Music : Diana & Marvin
I have always loved this album ever since I first purchased it in the late 70's( it was released in 1973.)The extra tracks on this new package just add to the brilliance of the album. Although Marvin's voice is stronger than Ms. Ross's, it still works and sounds great. The outstanding tracks are - Stop,Look,Listen, You are Everything, My Mistake was to Love You and Love Twins.Although all the tracks are great a great album to do the housework to.

Very catchy songs, some romantic others more soulful.

Of all the women he sang with (Diana Ross, Kim Weston etc), Marvin seemed most at ease with Tammi. (although they didn't always record their parts live in the studio together & some songs don't actually feature Tammi's voice at all!)

This CD contains all their hits plus some lesser known & diferrent versions of the hits.

You may be surprised how many you recognise!

Standout tracks for me include Ain't No Mountain High Enough, If This World Were Mine, You Ain't Living Until Your Lovin and The Onion SOng.

Well worth buying if you like romantic songs well sung.

The Contours had a second lease of life in the 80s when they were seen in Dirty Dancing the Concert Tour doing an extended version of Do you love me-their biggest hit from 1962.
Liverpool groups took notice including one called Faron's Flamingoes who covered the song on the same label which had the license to TM product-Oriole.
And the story goes that Brian Poole in conversation with the same wrote down the words from his record, recorded the song and topped the charts with it!
Hard to believe but it sounds like an urban myth to me.Why copy the words the sheet music was only a few pence.
This was the guy whose group the Tremeloes had been favored by Decca over the Beatles and needed a hit as their singles up to then had flopped.
Its not very ... Read More:

Most of the tracks are not the original recordings. Although a good deal of effort has probably gone into reproducing the original orchestrations etc, the end result is totally without feeling or soul. I would much rather have put up with some hiss and distortion if it meant hearing the original energy and soul of those old recordings. There are no sleeve notes whatsoever, so don't expect to learn anything about the band. This is not an expensive CD, but seriously, just set alight to a £5 note - at least you will get some warmth from that.
