I was lucky enough to see ES live twice in my lifetime. Once at a scooter rally in the 80s, and once, a year or so before his untimely parting from us, in Peterborough.

I saw him perform at the Cresset Centre in Peterborough along with Freda Payne and Martha Reeves on the "dancing in the street" tour. No disrespect to Freda or Martha (they were brilliant), but it was Edwin's show. It was an all-seater venue, but as soon as we'd heard the first few bars of "stop her on sight" there wasn't a flat seat in the house!

A more unassuming man you couldn't wish to meet - despite his immense talent. He shook hands with us all after the show and seemed genuinely surprised at our adulation. The man was pure class and a true ... Read More:

Motown's valuable Lost And Found series has been handed over to Hip-O-Select, who have expanded the format to double-CD sets, in this case featuring the ten-year tenure with the Gordy label of the fabulous Martha and the Vandellas (latterly Martha Reeves and the Vandellas). An unfortunate side-effect of this for UK customers is that the releases are somewhat harder to find, especially since Hip-O-Select seem not to export directly to here, and often pricey. They are, however, well worth tracking down.

The Motown vaults have been heavily plundered in recent years and it is now too well known that the quality of the hitherto unreleased material is unbelievably high to warrant expounding yet again. I would like to think there is another ... Read More:

Motown in the sixties were famous for a particular sound that had it's roots in R+B, but had all the rough edges polished off. Junior Walker (unlike their other stars) was allowed to record in his own way (very raw R+B), although he was eventually persuaded to record some mellow soul music, more typical of the Motown sound.

On this compilation, you get examples of Junior's raw sound (tracks like Shotgun and I'm a road runner) and his more mellow sound (particularly What does it take to win your love) as well as his versions of Motown classics (How sweet it is and Come see about me) which serve to emphasise his different style compared to the other Motown acts.

Junior was a saxophonist who ended up singing as well, but he's not a great ... Read More:

The late Marvin Gaye remains one of the most definitive male voices in Soul music. He truly was an utter genius and had such a creative and artistic flair. He remains one of the key influences with todays new generation of wannabe Soul/R&B singers.

In October 1982, Marvin released his first (and his last) studio album for CBS Records, after fleeing from Motown Records in a bid, much like Diana Ross' exact reasons for escaping Motown, for wanting to exert total control over his career, an exercise he was most certainly capable of. The album would be the classic, Midnight Love, which though offered no social commentary or made any sort of profound political statement like much of his previous efforts had, it still stands as a compelling, solid production ... Another collection of Stevie Wonder's earler songs which never fail to impress. Although the tracklist is somewhat short, this album contains a few of the many Stevie Wonder classics, including the beautiful 'My Cherie Amour' and the uplifting 'For Once In My Life', a version which is yet to be bettered by those who choose to cover it. This CD is short enough for any occasion where you need a quick blast of Stevie Wonder magic to brighten up the day - turn it on, crank up that volume and listen to one of the most amazing voices ever to have been laid down on vinyl!!!

89.The Best Sixties Album in the World...Ever Vol.1 by: Various Artists

Music : The Best Sixties Album in the World...Ever Vol.1
I regard this as the best series of sixties compilations yet released on CD. Even with 200 tracks between four volumes, it would have been easy to continue the series. On compilations like this, I particularly look for classic tracks by artists who only had one or two big hits. Of course, most of the major names are here although you won't find Elvis, the Beatles or the Rolling Stones here due to licensing restrictions.

On this volume, I was particularly pleased to find Rescue me (Fontella Bass) as I already had many of the other tracks elsewhere, but there are so many classics here that I never tire of hearing including Flowers in the rain (Move), Waterloo sunset (Kinks), Downtown (Petula Clark), The sun ain't gonna shine any more (Walker brothers), Dock of ... I've been a fan of Stevie's since I was a teenager back in the late 60's. I believe that he is one of the true greats from Motown and this is one of his best albums. "Ain't no lovin'" is a song of joy by someone that has found his true love which is echoed later in the lyrics "For Once in My Life". As a teenager I thought "God Bless the Child" was a Wonder creation until I grew older and learnt that it was a Billie Holiday and Arthur Herzog Jr composition. Nevertheless Stevie Wonder makes the song his own and evokes the hard times that prevailed when the song was written.
"Sunny" written by Bobby Hebb has been covered by at least 40 other singers but Wonders is the definitive version. Again he's singing about someone that he has fallen in love with and how she has ... Read More:
