At the time of writing, the relevant Amazon pages list 14 CD recordings of Bach's complete Brandenburg Concertos. This particular one can lay a strong claim to being one of the best. It offers a faithful, superbly played and authentically Baroque reading of these evergreen works. The six concertos that make up the Brandenburgs are very varied - they may not even have been conceived as a set - so it's refreshing to see that no artificial attempt at uniformity is made: the mantle of 'musical director' is shared amongst three highly accomplished violinists - Monica Huggett, Catherine Mackintosh and Elizabeth Wallfisch. It has to be said that all(non live) recordings of Le Mis have their faults.For one thing they cannot re~create the atmosphere of a live performance(as these discs do). Not only that,this recording gathers together the best of (many) Le Mis casts from around the world,and manages to give us the electric feeling that a staged performance does. Add to this the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra,which reveals the true emotion,breadth and sweep of Boublil & Schonberg's wonderful score. As a sidenote,I don't quite know what disc of Le Mis(previous reviewer) Mr Oram was listening to.I have just listened to both discs on headphones(which are merciless for showing up recording faults) and can find none. i too am a fan of nigel kennedy , but this recording doesnt do anything for me though as ever it is exceptionaly well played...but the combination of "modern" bits in among the classical music only distracts me..i like one or the other but if you are more adventurous than me,i highly recomend it!

This 5 CD collection from EMI Classics was released in 2006 to coincide nicely with the 150th anniversary (in 2007) of Elgar's birth in 1857. Included in the set are all the major orchestral works written by Elgar, recorded on various dates between 1962 and 1966. The performances are notable for both the conductor and artists. There is probably no better or appropriate interpreter of Elgar's work than Sir John Barbirolli, who played for the London Symphony Orchestra for the first performance (in 1919) of the cello concerto under the direction of Elgar himself - later the same year incidently Barbirolli was himself the soloist. This truly beautiful album by "Hansi" was first released in 1979 under the title "Christmas Classics" and reissued in the mid 1980's on CD under the same title. It has now re-appeared as The Christmas Album giving the impression that this is the only Christmas album by "Hansi". As the previous reviewer states there is also the "Midnight" album and also "Christmas Dancing" and a very unusual album called simply "Peace" on which appear a number of vocalists including Engelbert Humperdinck,Chris De Burgh and pianist Richard Clayderman among a number of other European artists.
