The two jazz suites featured on this album are more Tchaikovsky meets Strauss than jazz. Indeed, Shosta subtitled his second as a suite for promenade orchestra and the writer of the sleeve notes (Shostaphile Elizabeth Wilson) openly concedes that the composer had his eye on numerous future renditions performed by Red Army bands. Having said that, there are some interesting and entertaining items contained within the suites, brilliantly orchestrated.

The rendition of the first piano concerto on this CD is the best in my collection: probably a trifle to brisk for some, it is nevertheless precise and disciplined.

The overall sound of the CD is up to the usual Decca standards

Since the steady resurgence in popularity of Bach's music there has become an increasing number of Brandenburg Concerto recordings to chose from. Just like the numerous versions of Beethoven symphonies, there are now an abundance of these popular Bach works on CD, which on the one hand gives a variety of interpretations to listen to, but on the other causes confusion when deciding which to choose.

These recordings from 1978/1979 (orchestral suites) and 1982 (Brandenburg's) have been available previously on vinyl (the suites) and since 1988 on CD (Brandenburg's).

Of the many recordings now available, these remain one of my favourites. The musicianship of The English Concert, Trevor Pinnock (harpsichord) and Simon ... Read More:

I have to admit to not being one of Tchaikovsky's greatest fans. It is one of those deadspots in one's love of music that I've no doubt is my loss. A master melodist, certainly. But I find him too repetitious; all that interminable sequencing seems more of a nervous habit than a genuine means of musical expression; and, yes, he does wear his highly Romantic heart on a sleeve that seems a little threadbare on real musical content for a symphonist. So a recording has to go some to capture my attention, never mind my affection.

These recordings certainly go some. And then some more. You'd be hard-pushed to find performances of anything that maintain such a white-hot level of intensity throughout three fairly long symphonies.

Mitsuko Uchida is not my kind of pianist, once very disappointed by her wishywashy rendition of Debussy's 12 etudes, but when she plays Mozart, few pianists can match. This set includes all of my favourite Mozart concertos and is sheer bliss to your ears from begining to end, filled with magical moments and noble poise.

Check out A.Rubinstein's RCA 2 disc set as well, quite a contrast to Uchida and Perahia's style but outstanding in its own right.

This year has seen the release of three highly desirable Beethoven big boxed sets. First came EMI's 50 CD collection, (a bit of a mixed bag, with highlights including the Symphonies under Cluytens and the Giulini Missa Solemnis. However, it does also have Karajan's Fidelio from the early '70s, which must surely be the low point of the set).

Next came this Sony/BMG set which offers a delightful mix of modern, historically informed modern, and period instrument performances. Again there are highs and lows, but this time I find a more consistently rewarding selection of recordings than in the EMI set.

Finally we now also have the Brilliant Classics set, which claims to included all of Beethoven's works, mainly in fine recordings licensed from ... Read More:

Finding Wagner was one of the greatest discovery in my life. But I found that Wagner's compositions could be enjoyed maximally if they were performed by Berlin, Vienna, Bayreuth, or Concertgebouw. I collect Wagner's CDs btw, coz I'm crazy about it. This CD is a perfect choice for those who love Wagner, or love music with feelings.

If you want an honest, straigtforward yet beautifully played account of these lovely works then you won't go far wrong with this set. And such good value for money too!

Barenboim's legendary cycle recorded in the 1960's and 70's, both soloist and conducting the English Chamber orchestra. Which was, and still is, a superb Mozart orchestra. And Barenboim being one of the best exponents of Mozart and Beethoven I've heard.

Barenboim never rushes these works. Giving breadth, structure and feeling to all of them. Infact he slows right down in some of the slow movements. (I love the very slow tempo of second movement of PC No.21 for example).

Recordings are clear and honest. With good balance between Orchestra and Soloist. Shame the works ... Read More:

This wonderful performance set the standard for recordings of this (my favourite Mahler) symphony. It is perfect. For years there was nothing to touch it in the catalogue. Now, others have joined it in excellence but it remains a great performance.
