I am probably one of the few not to be overwhelmed by Karajan's Berlin 'Planets'. The sound is sumptuous, but there is much amiss below the surface.
Listening carefully, with score in hand, one has the distinct impression that some of the movements were under-prepared, judging by the looseness of the ensemble at times, the sprinkling of split notes and the odd wrong entry. There is also the near-catastrophy at the big climax in Mars where not everybody resolves the suspension on the second bar of the 5/2 - something that clearly should have been re-taken. I do not get any sense of committment here and I have to confess to preferring Karajan's 1961 Vienna recording, although that is not without its blemishes, including the conductor's misunderstanding ... Bought this on a whim. Actually on the strength of the previous reviews here. Well when I lived in the UK, I used to soar in reverie while listening to the shipping forecast. How could I resist an album by a band with such a name?

And this is indeed a very special album which stretches and strains against genre boundaries, although it is basically a kind of indoor folk music. Anyone who has heard "Mr and Mrs Smith and Mr Drake", "Desperate Straights", "Music From the Penguin Café", RIO spinoffs like "News From Babel" or the soundtrack to 1973's "The Wicker Man" will be well prepared. If those references mean nothing to you, then the sound of this album will probably either be 'too weird' or 'delightfully fresh', depending on so many things. Go on. ... Read More:

This is a wonderful symphony, based on Queen themes. It will not please all Queen fans but if you have imagination and any sense of beauty you will love it.
If you had never heard any Queen music this symphony would still stand in its own right as a beautiful piece of music.
The term 'strident' is used in other reviews but I would prefer to say that the symphony has good dynamic range. There are loud passages but these offset the quiet ones.
My favourite is the Adagio but others may have a different view.
It is well worth listening to a few times to get used to it.

Best known as the only female member of the Buena Vista Social Club she has been well established and respected as a singer in Cuba for over 50 years. Her passionate and emotional voice glides effortlessly through big band numbers, jazz and more traditional tunes and makes them all her own. The world has woken up over recent years to the mighty talent for so long hidden on this island, and Omara is up there with the best of them.

Mlynarski and Karlowicz, both forgotten for years even in their own country, recently picked up by Kennedy. It had to be a reason that Kennedy felt such a commitment for them: the beauty of their music. In particular, Karlowicz's concerto - a splendid match with following Chopin's nocturnes. Great enjoyment.

Whether you are primarily interested in the concerto or not this is a beautiful addition to any collection. The recording and playing is wonderful. The Scottish Fantasia might be regarded as the lesser piece but is my favourite. I have played it many times whilst visiting Scotland and sitting beside the river Gary immersed in the beauty of the music and the place. I highly recommend both.
