This latest release from Naxos brings together Copland's other purely orchestral `symphonies': Whilst it is the Third symphony which is probably the best known of his symphonic output, and which undoubtedly fulfils the concept of the symphony most powerfully and cogently, these three other works are engaging and distinctive in their own right.

The Symphony No.1 is an arrangement of Copland's symphony for Organ and Orchestra from 1924. As the booklet notes point out, the arrangement was primarily made so that the work could attract a greater number of performances through employing a conventional sized orchestra, yet the irony is that the original version has generally received more outings than the arrangement (comparison between ... Fashions come and go. From the latter years of the 20 Century the attempt to "recover" what Beethoven might have expected to hear through the use of copies of instruments in use at the time of composition and attention to (Czerny's?) metronome markings in the symphonic scores has has given us a current performing tradition of "lean and fast" Beethoven. This tradition is wonderfully well served on Sir Roger Norrington's complete set of the symphonies with the SWD Rundfunksorchest available on Hanssler (NOT the London Classical Players' set so temptingly cheap on Virgin!)and this would be my desert island set (it is easily available from Amazon though costs just over twice as much as the Klemperer discs. The best recorded performance of this much misunderstood symphony is Boult's mono recoding from the early 50's. A close second and in great sound is this from the wonderful Vernon Handley. Anyone who thinks this is a work of easy, serene pastoralism forgets this symphony was dedicated to Sibelius. Handley makes no such mistake and finds the moving, restless quality of Vaughan William's masterpiece. At bargain price, this is a showcase in the performance of British orchestral music.

Those who know John Adams mainly for his cheerful melodies and humoristic details (think of the funny banjo tunes in "Gnarly Buttons") will be surprised by his more serious side while listening to his latest recording. The Darma at Big Sur (2003) is a reference to Big Sur, a region in the coast of California with high mountains and deep precipices. The piece is an attempt at expressing through music the overwhelming emotion one feels when setting foot for the first time on the west coast of America. This happened to a young Adams himself, when he fled to California from the oppressing musical institution where serial music was very much in the air. A six-string electric violin, played by Tracy Silverman, is the medium. The piece builds up beautifully, starts ... Read More:

I must admit I was sceptical at first when I heard that Andsnes was releasing this new CD of the Grieg and Schumann concertos. As much as I feared that this might be a run-of-the-mill performance, I found I was very well pleased with the result. Although I own the Lupu CD of these kindred souls of piano concertos (and found them perfectly balanced), I soon found that this Andsnes version runs rings around all the other versions I have heard so far. No matter what other people say, Andsnes is a superb pianist who gives well-rounded and balanced accounts of these two concertos, backed by punchy accompaniment from Jansons and the Berliners, and a sumptuous EMI recording that lacks a little in detail and clarity.

The Grieg concerto starts out ... Read More:

This recording of Bernstein's music is well worth trying. Rated highly by Gramophone magazine, it is well worth a hear.

The Chichester Psalms alone are good value, but the other tracks of Bernstein's music played admirably by the Bournmouth Symphony Orchestra are all excellent.

25 years after his classic 1982 english concert recording Trevor Pinnock has returned to Bach's masterpiece concerto's with a new ensemble and although his new recording is good,i feel it still does not surpass his old one.In most of the concerto's on the new recording he has opted to use a small violone instead of the usual 16ft instrument and this deprives the sound of a healthy bass.Who knows if this was Bach's original intention or not but the bass just seems far too light in those concerti where the small violone is used. There is still some good playing here and Pinnock's new ensemble perform well enough for sure, only in concerto no1 is there a slight instibility from the horns. The trumpet part in no2 is better than most other performances i have heard(although ... "Tristan Und Isolde" is a huge and powerful score, one that for many is simply "too much" to handle. It has a kind of "black magic" that no other opera has, and it's not an easy score to get a handle on. The music as a whole is, to say the very least, overwhelming. It took me years and years to really "get into it", and I've heard many recordings of it. That said, I find it very much like a narcotic that I must have. Small wonder that Wagner, when writing it, himself said that "this Tristan is driving me mad". Whatever the case, this EMI monophonic recording stands as one of the great recordings of the century, and for good reason. Furtwangler's way with the score is extraordinary. It's as though he sees a supernatural mysticism in the music, and is determined to ... Read More:
