I know little of the history of the DHM label compared to Harmonia Mundi itself - but regardless this collection is not just terrific value, it is terrific quality. And if you already have the HM 50th anniversary collection, this is a worthy addition.

And along with the 200 years of the music of Versailles collection ... all I can say is you'll have a long but worthwhile CD ripping session (to flac!) to make all this music far more easily accessible on PC, streamed to HiFi, or a decent portable flac-capable "MP3" player.

My experience was the same as that of Robert Livingston -- the wrong disc (a duplicate) in one of the sleeves (and actually the same wrong disc in the same wrong sleeve); and everything he says about the shoddy presentation is true. Any listener will want to correlate the symphonies with what was going on at the time in the Soviet cultural world, for which he needs at the very least the dates of composition: these, however, can be easily found on the internet, as can also informative reviews of previous issues of the individual CDs.
How good are these works? They are never as good as Shostakovich at his best, and never as bad as Shostakovich at his worst. Despite superficial influence from Scriabin and other innovators, we rarely get ... Read More:

I totally agree with everyone else that Ms. Thomas has indeed a glorious set of vocal cords, to match the glorious pair of eyes, which are given much exaggerated prominence in the booklet. What disappointed me was the choice of material to showcase said vocal cords. Nice pieces all, but many of them done to death - for example, "Ombra mai fu" (Handel's "Largo"), "Bist du bei mir", "Let the bright seraphim". In addition, Ms. Thomas gives me the impression that she is concentrating on pure beauty of tone and largely omitting any feeling from the pieces. Given the glamorous treatment she gets in the booklet photos, it seems that this is an effort to "sell" the lady in a crowded and not terribly popular market in terms of sales. Hopefully, having now been sold, ... Read More:

This double CD album, a mixture of Vaughan Williams's most popular and rarely-heard music, is a cherishable collection indeed for the excellent performances contained in it, the constant delight the music affords, and the fact that both discs are full to the brim with an embarrassment of riches.

Richard Hickox is a most gifted interpreter of RVW, and these performances see him - and the Northern Sinfonia - at their peak. The soloists in the concerti are also heard at their best - Bradley Creswick in the Concerto Accademico, and Roger Winfield in the Oboe Concerto.

The first disc has a most attractive mixture, much of it comparative rarities, starting with the orchestral version of the Serenade to Music, and includes the overture to the opera 'The ... Read More:

I am glad this version is still available after all these years for it is a gem! Written as part of the War Trilogy ( 8th and 9th Symphonies being the others) it symbolises the struggle for survival in a besieged Leningrad. This version may not be to everyones taste for it is very loud, fast and brash. Leonard Bernstein draws every emotion possible from this music; he allows the music to flow and the emotions to surface. A wonderful performance all round. The recording is brilliant too, but make sure you don't upset the neighbours for it can get very loud particularly during the famous March, and the closing bars in the final movement. No lover of Shostakovich should be without this version.

There can be no doubt that Gilels is brilliant here, in the First, in the Second, and in the Fantasies.

For those who are particular fans of the Second, may I also recommend having a look at Gilels' earlier, more energetic recording of the Second, with Reiner and the Chicago Symphony. There are some for whom this may be the preferable disc, though my advice would be to get both.

Also, do please have a listen to Solomon, who has made some of the greatest recordings of Brahms piano concertos, both of which are easily available on Testament, and include some other beautiful Brahms piano works. Of particular note, I think, are the Handel Variations.

(Note that, like Gilels, Solomon is also exceptional when it comes to playing Beethoven.)

Such is Classic FM's marketing team's enthusiasm for releasing these 'Music For' compilation albums we should soon have a CD in our collection to cover every eventuality in our lives!

This one is for dinner parties - although being a single CD it may need to be played several times depending on how quickly your guests eat - and the intention is to create a calm, relaxed atmosphere with perhaps an air of sophistication to those social events.

There should be something on this album to please everyone round the dinner table. Satie's 'Trois Gymnopedies' is soothing and familiar, Haydn's 'Cello Concerto no. 2' is more lively and Handel's 'Water Music' adds a bit of ceremony to the event.

The recordings, as ever with Classic FM, are good ones ... Read More:

This is one of 3 Albinoni CDs by Collegium Musicum 90 on the Chandos label. They are all superb. The music is excellent, sounding very fresh and clear. Glorious playing. A must have for your collection!

This CD is wonderful and has been exceptionally usefull for my A2 performance investigation; she plays so differently from many clarinettists and so gives me plenty to talk about. Hearing the 5 Bagatelles has been really good for my own performances too; I've learnt a lot by hearing another play the pieces.
