and I like the box too: I can always pick it out among the other VW sets ;-) A wonderful evocative 3rd, a tense war study. Not very pastoral, nor bucolic or lyrical: I do not agree much with Vernon Handley's interpretation. Rather it is the past remembered, resigned melancholy that something is not quite right, yet with self-discovery and steely determination that is discussed and evolved by the soloists. Never forget that a war demands and makes a different mindset we do not understand. I find Rued Langgaard's deeply disturbing 4th Symphony, "Leaf Fall" 1916, to be in good company here. Haitink's take on things generally differs just a bit from the English conductors, but I think "In the Fen Country" in particular justifies ... Read More:

I bought this CD on the basis of being called "Meditation" - however as other reviewers have commented it is definately not music for meditating to. However, what you do have is a collection of classical music to relax to. I am not a big classics fan but some pieces were already familiar to me through their use in film and television. There were one or two tracks that I found a little too dramatic to find relaxing but on the whole I would happily recommend this if you are looking for a collection of gentle, soothing and quite beautiful music.

No question that Ashkenazy, Argerich, & Michelangeli are geat pianists and that their Rach recordings are among the best. But two interpreters are so outstanding that their recordings are...what can one say...transcendent ? The recordings by Rachmaninov himself are benchmarks and beyond reproach. Unfortunately he lived at a time when recording technology was primitive, although modern restoration specialists have made a wonderful job of bringing his recordings to life on the Naxos Historical label. If one cannot put up with the shortcomings of restored mechanical/electric recording technology, then the next best option is Horowitz, on whom Rachmaninov himself had conferred his blessing. Well the compositions are brilliant and the playing is brilliant, BUT it is this ridiculous "Opendisc". Despite apparently not being copy protected it does not let the first disc be ripped for my MP3 player. They say you can get extra info, but you have to register with more personal data than is needed to open a bank account. Their helpline is patronising and unhelpful

I really enjoyed this CD and I did find the music relaxing. However as someone who meditates regularly I do not think that it is music that would be used to meditate to. One can sit and relax to this CD but if you want to meditate this CD, in places, can be quite stirring and would not lend itself to an actual meditation practice.

Simply a marvellous performance and recording of Tchaikovsky's (slightly neglected) Manfred Symphony. The R.L.P.O play marvellously, with particularly characterful woodwinds, and Petrenko delivers a performance that has all the excitement of a live performance. The great melody in the strings in the final movement is delivered with a terrific sweep; this is a truly committed performance, and is very well recorded (much better than most record companies get in Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall). At this price it's an absolute bargain. Tchaikovsky lovers don't hesitate!

yes it didn't win a Gramophone award but surely it's a fantastic recording. crystal clear, well directed by Sir Charles Mackerras. Listening to them is pure joy. Dont know where to start? this is the recording that you can start with absolutely! 5 star!

EMI's new 30-disc box-set is one of the truly outstanding contributions to Vaughan Williams' 50th anniversary celebrations. In one collection listeners now have virtually his entire output in recordings ranging from the very good to the exceptional: this set is a tribute of EMI's long-standing commitment to British music (now sadly curtailed). Vernon Handley's magisterial cycle of the symphonies is beautifully played and recorded, and the major choral works and operas are all presented in excellent performances and recordings. There are some omissions (of course, since EMI did not record absolutely everything Vaughan Williams wrote) but these can be easily rectified through the additional purchase of the opera 'The Poisoned Kiss' and the original version ... I play these pieces regularly on my piano but I was reduced to tears on hearing several of these renditions by Barenboim. They are intensely intellectual and emotive interpretations and may not be to your taste but boy, they do have impact. I am now searching for Barenboim's later recordings to compare the styles. Impetuous youth, or genius? Only you can tell!!

The Gubaidulina has to be listened to a few times to experience its real power, but it grabbed me from the beginning. Its a very modern peice but at the same time classical in feel. The Bach takes no getting used to and its refreshing to hear a soloist not trying to be too "authentic" in her style. That being siad the overall performance is light and brisk. Mutter just gets better and better in my view. I also have to comment on the outstanding quality of the recording- if I were a geek I'd buy it just for that.
