This is indeed great music and this orchestra knows just how to play it from the fiery take on the first dance onwards. These are all Dvorak's own tunes, but he was obviously tapping into the the historic folk tradition. In creating his own tunes in traditional styles he makes his intention clear, it is not to preserve the music of the past but to bring it alive in the present. Parallels to what Dvorak was doing can just as well be seen in the best of the 1960's and 70's folk revival in Britain as in folk music derived works of other classical composers. Excellent! & not all war themes, but mostly. This is one CD that you must purchase and add to your collection, you don't have to be a war film buff either, but it helps. Inspiring stuff without the "stiff upper lip mentality". Even my three year old son was dancing/jumping around the living room! If that's not testimony enough? I don't know what is? Buy it, ya won't regret it!

Whoever is going to buy this cd will be certainly satisfied with it. It contains an excellent performance of Dvorak cello concerto. However its status as the "best", definitive performance (if ever these kind of statements can make any sense) of this work is certainly excessive. For instance, Rostropovich with Talich is not as sumptuously played but it is certainly more idiomatic. Personally I prefer it. The famous Casals recording is, as cello playing, unmatchable. The pulse and phrasing of Casals are a class apart even for Rostropovich. Du Pre with Celibidache provides such a moving performance which, for all its smoothnes, richness and fullness of sound, the Rostropovich-Karayan cannot match.

For me, absoloutely the most incredible interpretations from Solti and the Chicago Symphony. Also the engineering on these recordings is far superior to any other set. I'm delighted to find the full works in this boxed set. I wholly recommend above any other orchestra/maestro or engineering setup. Enjoy! James Sykes, Swindon, England.
