You can't dance to it, it isn't remotely cool and it's by a man in his sixties with a strained, nasally voice. And it's great. After four decades of writing and releasing music - albeit with some extended intervals - this new album stands to be compared favourably with the best Newman has ever produced. In songwriting terms, "genius" is a much overused and devalued expression, regularly applied these days to anyone who can muster three basic chords along with a grasp of kindergarten English. In reality, few songwriters can match Newman's genius: Bob Dylan and Tom Waits come to mind; beyond that you're already struggling. This is the first time I have bought a REM Cd and so far, the tracks I have heard are great. Every song on this album is great.

I've know about Ray for some time and couldn't wait to get my hands on the album. His voice is like something from a distant past of actual singer songwriters. He couldn't be more pained in some of his songs if someone had actually stabbed him with the steely shard that is love. This is a MUST have album that transacends any other artist around today. He's little known and let's keep it that way, God forbid that Radio 1 give him a rave review! Simply astounding.

Not heard the VHS Video in a while but this is so much better! Sound quality not the best on a DVD but a vast improvement on VHS. More songs, about 20 mins extra and Bono hasn't yet learned his stage craft. The Edge looks very un-rockstar as does Adam with his curly hair, Larry looks like he's still in (primary) school and Bono has the most ridiculuous hairdo (even by his standards). I could have done without Surrender & Seconds but the rest of the songs are storming, from Out of Control through to 40. This is a very loud DVD, so turn it up and destroy the neighbourhood! U2 when they were little!

This is the perfect soundtrack for the movie, though not necessarily a great soundtrack, if that makes sense!! A lot of thought went into the selection of tracks, with obvious numbers such as 'don't let the sun go down on me' and 'people are strange', and great tracks such as 'cry little sister'. The album has a nice, gothic feel to it. That said, take it away from its context to the movie, I'm not sure its something a casual listener would get into. Personally, I like the film, so I like the soundtrack. Watch the film first, then you can decide.....

I fell in love with this movie when it first opened in theaters and I loved all the music in it, including the score, and particularly the bit where Colin Firth proposes to Aurelia. But when I bought the CD here in the US, all it had what the popular pop stuff! (I guess they figured Americans wouldn't appreciate the beautiful instrumental music? Probably right actually.) You guys in the UK got the whole deal. It will be well worth the overseas shipping!!

Richard Ashcroft has never been one to undersell his own brilliance - his solo career may have been weak, and the first two Verve albums excellent, but on Urban Hymns the hype finally justified the mouth. Just as the Britpop bubble was about to burst, the Verve reformed for one last album, to sign off at their peak (although, obviously, they have since reformed again). Urban Hymns is the distillation of everything great about the Verve, but with an extra poppy edge. The band generally reign in their psychedelic jams of the previous two albums, with notable exceptions being the fantastic 'Rolling People' and even better 'Catching The Butterfly.' Originally released in 1968 The Village Green Preservation Society is now seen as The Kinks finest individual release. In retrospect it's easy to see why it sold so poorly as its cosy nostalgic songs were well out of place in a time when rock was just beginning to get heavy. It's only with the passing of time than one can admire the albums brilliance. The album is all Ray Davies originals and the themes of the songs are sepia toned to a time which probably never existed, but should have. What really makes the album work is the punchy production, which is at once rhythmic and melodic, and prevents the atmosphere from being twee. This is most definately an album that deserves at least 3 listenings to from everyone who says they like listening to music because it is very very very good. The opening title track 'Bombtrack' is a perfect track to listen to to understand this album because it is almost like a round up of everything to come in the rest of the album. Driving guitar riffs and licks (yes licks) from Morello and angsty hip lyrics from Zach. In fact the only thing it really doesn't convey about the album is quite the intricate brilliance of Morello's soloing ability and guitar playing. What made Rage popular back then still holds so much appeal today to real music fans because they are a truly unique experiance and their debut album can easily be counted amongst the greatest rock albums ever.
