This album won't grab you at first. I had it a while before it got under my skin. Just be patient, you will be richly rewarded.

Strongly recommended.

..oh and check the sound quality. This album is nearly 35 years old and it gives plenty of modern recordings a complete pasting.

Some real gems here. Granted some of the tracks have been released on other compilation records (namely Gilles Peterson's; indeed Forge used to DJ with Gilles back in the eighties; check out their excellent Dingwalls record) but that's because the songs are excellent. There's a nice mix of funk, jazz, folk and soul here that is sure to make your average party goer stand up, take notice, and applaud your unique and well flavoured musical taste.

Okay, so this isn't Dylan or the Beatles, but it sure is fun.
Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album isn't just "the one with 'Free Bird' on it", it's much more than that, one of the original group's best efforts, and quite possibly the best one of the lot. It mixes heartfelt ballads, country, swaggering riff-rockers, and the delightfully silly down-home boogie-rock of "Gimme Three Steps" and "I Ain't The One".

I do prefer the slightly tougher (and string-less) live rendition of "Tuesday's Gone" from the "One More From The Road" album, but this one is no throwayay either. And you can't help but love the aforementioned "Gimme Three Steps" and "I Ain't The One", a wonderful blend of self-deprecating "hick" lyrics and gritty guitar riffs.

Is this what passes for talent these days?
I am so sick and tired of hearing girls only just out of school going on about how life and love has been so unfair to them, and to top it all off, she sings it all in a whiney nasal voice (thanks to the other people who commented on this too..xx).
What is it with all the angst and emotional turmoil that seems to be ripping our eardrums apart these days? Am I missing something, but I thought music was supposed to be uplifting, not whiney and suicidal.
Rhianna....do your songs a favour....get someone else to sing them, either that, or blow your nose girl!!!!

A great album gathering all the big hits.
Although some classic Commodores tracks are missing such as 'I Feel Sanctified'.
There is another Compilation with all of their funky tracks although these are only the short versions.
There should be a companion CD of long lost 12" and extended remixes.
Surely 'Nightshift' was released after Lionel Richie had left the Commodores, and so it has no place on one of his albums?

I was still quite young when the disco craze hit the world, certainly way too young to enjoy what was going on in nightclubs, not too young to enjoy the music though!
My favourites at the time were undoubtedly this band. I recall dancing to all the hits at school disco's and once at a very magical evening trip to a local ice rink disco, with the youth club. But as well as stirring memories of the the late 70's and early 80's revisiting these tracks creates thoughts of just how stylisticly variable, vocally accomplished and downright excellent this band was! They deserved a lot more credit way back when and they do know. I defy you not to want to dance like crazy to "use it up" and "back to my roots" and I absolutley defy you to listen carefully to "native ... Read More:

Out of all the members of Destiny's Child, Michelle's solo career has been the most low key. This is hardly a criticism though considering she has sold more than a million copies of her gospel albums worldwide which is an achievement considering it is not a market well known for selling many records. However, for one reason or the other it is time to go mainstream, and thankfully she hits all the right notes.
The album consists of mainly uptempo urban-pop songs with very few slow songs or mid-tempo's. That said, the next single 'The Greatest' is a very impressive ballad, not bland and dull like most of todays ballads, also rumored (now changed) second single 'Stop This Car' is a top notch mid-tempo. The album is pure quality from start to finish. From the ... Read More:

Barry White didn't mean a great deal to me until I worked night shift in a local factory, when he was played quite a lot as the local station's 'sexy, night-time music.' Well, it may have been those things and more if you were at home on the sofa or in bed, but on night shift? But having your sleeping habits turned topsey-turvey certainly gave his music a more receptive edge and the emotions became much sharper, and the 'You See The Trouble With Me' track, which has a quirky and unusual kind of guitar backing really started to appeal.
Then I heard track 5, the ultra-famous 'Just The Way You Are' and being there quietly working and listening with my colleagues, the words and lyrics to this fabulous song made me realise that whatever you thought of 'the walrus ... Read More:
