I bought this as wallpaper music - and got a very pleasant surprise! Several of the pieces stopped me in my tracks, made me sit down and forced me to listen. Michala Petri demonstrates a masterly control of her instrument and a high level of musicianship in a wide ranging selection of material - from reconstituted Bach to specially composed 20th Century pieces. Outstanding for me was the Sammartini Concerto: Ms Petri shows a lightness of touch combined with serious enthusiasm and an obvious delight that literally stopped me from working and made me listen. The support given by the Moscow Virtuosi also deserves mention. Koppel's pieces are fun, as are the arrangements from Grieg and Satie. Read More:

This is one of those discs that has had a long life in my house - I first had the soundtrack of Star Wars on cassette tape, then when that broke (from being overplayed), I got the vinyl version (so I could re-record the tracks in a better order). When that record set got worn and poppy, I got the CD, and then when this special edition came out, I got it too. So, I guess one could say that this is a perennial favourite. Even the design of the discs is fun - the round discs are overprinted with a graphic of the Death Star on them; were I still a kid (I was 12 years old when Star Wars first came out), I would be thrilled (and I must confess, that small part of me does still enjoy this quite a bit). First of all be aware that the two best tracks from the film, MmmMmmMmm by the Crash Test Dummies and Where I Find My Heaven by The Gigolo Aunts are not on this CD. Which really sucks. However, it does make up for it with the amazing "Too Much Of A Good Thing" by The Sons featuring Brett Reilly, and "Crash" by the Primitives. The rest of the album seemed mediocre to me when I first bought it about seven years ago but after repeated listening the other tracks have grown on me, particularly "New Age Girl" and "Insomniac"

Of all the versions available of Rigoletto this one is by a good margin my favorite. All soloists possess the ideal vocal profile for their roles. Robert Merrill with his bronze-like rock solid voice offers here a stir- ring portrait of the hunchback capturing his bitterness and heartbreak splendidly. Anna Moffo is a delightful Gilda - she brings considerable warmth and tenderness to the part and sings an exquisite "Caro nome". Alfredo Kraus is perhaps the best Duca on disc - he sings with superb aplomb and captures the seductive and cruel side of the character like few others. The rest of the cast is in very good hands. Georg Solti is perhaps a bit hard-driven but the end result is undeniably exciting.
