This seems to be a fair enough compliation, with a little bit of this and that from some of Tomita's best works, but for me, it leaves a few questions unanswered.

Firstly Tomita's works are to a grand scale with good coherence from beginning to end, from prelude to finale. He carries themes and sounds through an album in sympathy with the manner in which composers carried themes and style through their complete pieces. To then dissasemble these ideas from one another and worse still patch them together with other pieces and different styles seems to miss the point a little - like a "greatest guitar riffs of the 20th century CD" which contained 20 seconds of smoke on the water followed by 20 seconds of voodoo chile.

This record is absolutely delightful, and it ought to appeal to a wider musical audience than just enthusiasts for Handel or for the 18th century style. It would make very good background music for one thing, but it deserves - more than deserves -- to be listened to with full and proper attention. Handel's recorder sonatas, the liner-note seems to say, were the product of his association with first the Earl of Burlington, whose interest in the arts was genuine, and later with the Duke of Chandos who was a bit of a poseur and opportunist. It would have been helpful to have had some comment on the pieces themselves, Handel's instrumental music being as problematical as it is. Is the attribution to Handel completely certain in all cases, for instance? ... Read More:

Colm Wilkinson opened as Jean Valjean in both the London and Broadway productions of "Les Miserables," and like Michael Crawford in "Phantom of the Opera" builds upon his successful by recording an album of selections from various musicals. Consequently, the joy of listening to "Stage Heroes" is that not only do you get to hear his memorable "Bring Him Home" from "Les Mis," but he takes a turn at "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables." Wilkinson performs a pair of songs from "Man of La Mancha," "Chess," "West Side Story," "The Phantom of the opera," "South Pacific," "Camelot" and "Porgy & Bess." If you enjoyed hearing Wilkinson's pure tenor voice singing in "Les Mis" then you will certainly find something to enjoy equally as much from this album (I especially ... Read More:

Richter's RCA recording of Well-Tempered Klavier still remains as one of the most awe-inspring recording in his entire discography, and no other pianists can match the depth and the intense beauty Richter captures. (Recently I listened to Angela Hewitt's live performance of the work and was amazed by the supefaciality of her playing. More amazing was the fact that critics and audience were ecstatic in praising her performance!)

Check out equally stunning Richter's 60s recording of the Book 1 (originally issued by Russia Revelation), now available from a Russian label called Venezia.
