This album is one of the finest musicals i have ever had the pleasure to listen to. Although the accompaniment is not a 'full' as most musicals (i.e. doesn't use a full orchestra) its instrumentation is well suited the the tone of the music. I was impressed with the versitality of the writing and the performers on the album are extremely talented, and are able to create different characters with ease for each song.
Although, i have not yet been fortunate to see Songs for a New World on stage as yet, I shall look out for tour dates in the UK. I am a huge fan of Jason Robert Brown, and i intend on listening to more of his work in the future.

All in all, I would say this musical is a huge success, and I would recommend everyone ... Read More:

This CD is absolutely brilliant. I originally bought it because I heard the track 'Home Away From Home' on Classic FM and wanted to come down the aisle to it, but I quickly fell in love with the whole CD, and so did my fiance. The last four tracks are my favourites but as the tracks tell their tale, they are alternately sad, thoughtful, lively and uplifting. It has some fantastic music on it - if you love Irish music and particularly the flute, viola and piano, this is the CD for you. I have since bought this CD for my mum, who also loves it, and have bought the sheet music so some friends can play it in piano and flute duet at our wedding.

14.Brassed Off: film score [SOUNDTRACK] from: RCA

Music : Brassed Off: film score [SOUNDTRACK]
Great set of numbers from the film. But whatever you do don't miss Trevor Jones'snippets of incidental music from the film. If you play them sequentially, without the main tracks, they form a coherent threead, with the theme developing through subtle change from bright and whimsical, through wistful, through to dramatic and doom laden. Those incidental snippets actually move me more than the main pieces, perhaps except for the masterful d'Oranjuez.

Read More:

I was introduced to the symphonies of Vaughan Williams in my teens through LPs of the complete cycle by Andre Previn and the LSO. These LPs have now been transferred to disc and have been made available again. They remain, after all these years and having listened to a number of other cycles, the best of the bunch, in my humble opinion.

Before moving to London, part of Andre Previn's background was in the theatre. As an American showman, he proved capable - and still is capable - of bringing out the drama inherent in the symphonic form, whilst at the same time producing a deeper understanding of the traits that make up each symphony.

There are two anecdotes I like about Previn's relationship to the music of RVW. I do not know ... Read More:

This is an excellent introduction to the Sowetos, being a compilation of various items from previous albums. The group's name itself is brilliant, with its culture-clash combination of South Africa's most famous black township and Western Europe's most high-art genre.

And the music works just like you'd imagine. Take Zebra Crossing: the intro features string quartet playing of a mainly conventional kind and with a good full tone. There is just a bit more sliding than your average string quartet to give you a clue... And then the beat comes in - irresistibly African. Now try to stop yourself tapping your foot or boogieing around the dining-room!

One word of warning however.

This compilation is drawn from Cleo Laine's RCA albums recorded between 1974 and 1996. Over this period she recorded many albums of various themes and styles. Therefore this 2CD set features a mixture of jazz, Broadway and pop. Cleo Laine's beautiful voice and wide range is showcased on great songs like "Just A-Sittin' and A-Rockin'", "It Don't Mean a Thing," plus "Bess You Is My Woman" and "My Man's Gone Now" from her duet album with Ray Charles "Porgy and Bess". Also includes famous Laine songs outside of jazz, "Send In The Clowns", "He Was Beautiful" and "Streets of London". This collection is a good introduction to Laine's back catalogue, and will give the listener the opportunity to decide whether they want to delve deeper into her jazz, pop or Broadway ... Read More:
