A classic album, full of humour, inventiveness and colour. Listening to it now, I'm blown away by the painstaking work that must have gone into producing this on old analogue equipment: Moogs and suchlike. A star is lost for the abysmal quality of this new "surround" mix. Whole chunks of the melody get lost in the midfield at times. A huge shame.

I think this 7 cd set is totally worth the low price.
I can't find any review of this set of CDs online, so I did some research after I bought it.
It is the first CD release of Sir Andrew Davis's complete Dvorak's symphonies.
These recordings were made between 1978-1982 by CBS. (ADD/DDD)
SONY DSD remaster eliminated most of the early digital sound problems.
PO players produced warm and dramatic sounds.
The still young Andrew Davis did a great job adding his personal reading of the scores. I like his slower tempo treatment of Symphony No. 9.
Symphony no.1,3 and the Carnival overture are also great.
Only down side is the linear notes is too short, and lack of detail.
Dvorak's music always bring ... Read More:

I bought this in Berlin (in the Berlin Phiharmonie) as a momento of a visit there - but it was following a hearing of 'Four Last Songs' on Radio 3 that I was encouraged to buy it. Ironically it is the 'Alpine Symphony' which I would recommend most of all. This version encourages you to listen to it as it sounds - not necessarily where your imagination takes you. I have always been put off the 'Alpine' because the imagery has been too obvious! In this recording I found myself appreciating the score and the picture post cards came second - so much the better for that as well - in my view. The sound is exceptional and I would imagine, if you are SACD enabled, it will sound absolutely marvellous. I will probably buy the set if the other recordings of ... Read More:

It's most probable that whichever version you grew up with is the one you're going to swear by. Mine was a very charming (and, it has to be said, posh) effort, narrated by the comfortingly stuffy classical music expert Richard Baker. I was amazed to hear Bowie (terrible actor that he is) do an even better job.

If you like to listen to this masterpiece of the keyboard music played on the piano rather than on the harpsichord, this 4-CD set should be very rewarding. The performance, recorded in 1972-73, is of the higest stature.

In Sviatoslav Richter's performance, there is absolutely no idiosyncrasy of Glenn Gould or sluggishness of Rosalyn Tureck or wrong notes of Edwin Fischer, however good their performance may be. Nothing seems to be imposed from outside, and Bach's music flows totally naturally without any quirky tempo and rhythm changes for their own sake. Richter makes use of the freedom of expression available to the piano, but with total control and restraint.

This is the art of the keyboard of the baroque period at its peak, ... Read More:
