I realy do not like comparing this version with the two earlier recorded versions and or the many live shows that made it under the radar like the one at Casa Manyana in Fort Worth, Texas. But except for first time buyers the comparison may be important. Every one will have a favorite. The first is usually the standard by which the others are measured. And for those that grew up with Lisa Minnelli it is hard to imagine another Sally until this version was made. Some call this more real and dramatic not thinking that so were the others for their time. Even the son mix changes with the version. The most striking difference is with the song "Tomorrow Belongs to Me". The original Broadway version was cut down but has a great impact as the waiters ... Read More:

I must confess to putting Taverner aside for quite a few years, so was unaware of this work until I stumbled upon it in a library. I'm glad I did. Taverner has always had a deeply felt sense of the lyrical and if any composers can hint at the beauty of faith then he can. This, I think, is his crowning achievement. It is just shot full of devotion and a particularly mysterious quality - a sort of numinous holiness and sanctity. It really does transport you to a dimly lit cathedral space and a night vigil. It is in many parts transcendently beautiful, particularly the main choral motif "Lord Jesus Christ, son of man, have mercy on us.." and I defy anyone not to be moved by the piece. At the time only 21 years of age , Evgeny Kissin set a new standard for modern piano playing. It is reputed that when Sergei Racmaninov himself heard Horowitz play this piece he was simply gasping with amazement......well. I darent dream what he would have done had he heard this rendition which , to my mind , is the most startling live performance ever and certainly the best recording of the piece. His technique is embarrassingly faultless throughout this concerto and if we knew didnt know better , we would not believe that this piece is considered (perhaps along with Prokofiev) to be the hardest piece written for piano. The final movement climax has the potential to bring tingles to the spine ( it is , indeed , worth buying for that reason alone ) and ... Read More:

If you watched The Thin Red Line and felt drawn in by Hans Zimmer's beautiful score, then you were most likely aware of how well married the score is with the Melanesian Chants that threaded through the film. I looked for the Soundtrack CD primarily to find these chants, and while I was very happy with Hans Zimmer's compositions, I was unhappy to find only one of the many chants from the film featured on the disc. Hoping that one day I would find a re-released and extended soundtrack, I found this CD. It took about as long as the fraction of a second to click the "add to basket" button as it did on playing this CD to bring out the same emotional charge I felt during the film. With excellent performances on disc from both Adrian Boult and Bernard Haitink you'd perhaps expect an American-born conductor to be at some disadvantage in a work so quintessentially English. Not so. Previn's account is, for me, the very finest on record and I suspect may never be surpassed. Even if hi-fi technology should imprive much further, it would be hard to believe it could add anything to a new recording that could give it the edge over this. Interpretively Vaughan Williams' work just doesn't come better served than this. Here is grandeur and poignancy aplenty, in a work at once majestic and often heartbreakingly wistful and nostalgic. the orginal chess is such a musical epic this sounds very pale in comparission. the epic feel of the musical extravaganza has gone..and has much of the original story! most of the story and the songs are reworked but the mastery is lacking! for fans of abba its interesting! for fans of "chess" its an interesting interpretation! but if you are new to chess please buy the original cd...its a hundred times better...the sound..the vocals..the orchestration is so much bigger and better..and the actual story is easier to follow than this version! a nice add on or follow up but not a good introduction
