Samuel Barber was inspired by a verse from Virgil's Georgics, about a small stream that becomes a river, and one can mentally picture that image listening to this piece; Barber's Adagio appeals to a wide audience because of its beauty, peace, and glorious melody, and in this CD we get to hear how different instruments and artists can color the basic composition.
It has been a part of many film soundtracks, like "Platoon" and "The Elephant Man", and been played at funerals of historic figures like John F. Kennedy.
The first interpretation is the one we are most familiar with, the traditional string arrangement, played by the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by Charles Munch, who was musical director of the BSO from 1949-1962.

Temirkanov chooses dangerously slow tempo for the outer movements (1st movement 20:29/the last 12:01)and probably he is the only conductor who succeeds in this unusually slow pace, while Bernstein and Giulini make complete mess of the whole symphony (Both DG). He introduces the beautiful second theme very slowly with amazing tenderness, but never lets it distort the whole picture of the movement. When the theme returns again, after the explosive outburst, it is most beautifully sung in impressive grandeur. The last movement is a bit too slow, but again the conductor manages to hold slow sections and fast sections seamlessly and achives profoundly elegiac mood. The inner two movements are also very good.

There are a great many great recordings of some of the music on this disc. In the case of the wonderful Opus 39 cycle, which forms the heart of this record, there have been performances by such great names as Matthias Goerne, Ian Bostridge and Kate Royal (in collaboration with Graham Johnson on his excellent Hyperion series), so this new CD is entering a crowded marketplace. However, do not let the big names sway you before you consider buying this. Goerne's tone can at times be reedy and not entirely pleasant, and anyone who has read any of my other reviews will know of my intense allergy to Bostridge. Yes, the man has a pleasant, light tenor voice, but his interpretation seems hysterical, neurotic at times, and I can bear no more than about 5 minutes ... Read More:

This was something genuinely new and interesting in its day and is deserving of a place in the collection of every classical music lover.

Listen for example to Debussy's "Reverie", taken to a whole new feeling of wistful remoteness - I defy anyone who is not a total music snob to say that this isn't quite beautiful.

"Snowflakes are dancing" is similarly ... Read More:
