String Quintet, one of the most sublime music Schubert wrote, was featured in BBC Radio 3's Building a Library recently, and I was surprised they chose Hagen Quartet with Heinrich Schiff as best. In my opinion they play as if playing against each other and their harsh sound simply do not blend. I think the highly acclaimed 70s stereo recording by Guarneri Quartet with Rose is far superior, with their warmly expressive autumnal sound fully resonating to enhance the music. Their tempi judgment is superb and the slow movement is simply sublime. It is good to have this recording back in catalogue with better sound quality, and another chamber music master piece, Quartettsatz played equally superb is a real bonus.

These are glorious performances by the most remarkable of all 20th.- century violinists, recorded pretty well, if with a balance which favours the violin a little more than it should. The Tchaikovsky Concerto was tailor-made for Heifetz, serving his astonishing virtuosity and his melting tone colours down to the ground, and Heifetz takes every opportunity to shine without ever being unfaithful to the music. The Brahms, much less of a display concerto but extremely difficult to play well, is every bit as good. Heifetz puts tremendous energy and rhythmic impetus into the first and last movements, which never sound stodgy (as they can in an ill-judged performance), and controls the lyricism in the second movement so that the climaxes sing out gloriously ... I bought this CD knowing Ms Price's works and it did not dissapoint me. She has a 'true' Mozart voice, big, or rather big in a 'spinto' sense that perfectly acheives all I believe Mozart intended in these roles. His music was for voices that were big in expression - especially the roles that Ms Price was the exact interpreter of. Others may disagree but for me, this is the best. Sadly she missed out on roles at Covent Garden -perhaps due to another soprano being a particular favourite at that time so we missed out on a large part of her career. Luckily we have this CD that clearly shows what a great and true exponent of this music she was.

This has to be one of the best recorded performances of Mahler 5 in the catalogue. Particularly in the last movement, the recorded balances favour the wind instruments, producing a rather more rustic and quite unusual effect compared with other more "integrated" orchestral sounds. This is interesting and pleasing on the ear. That said, however, I find the performance to a little "four-square" and ordinary compared with the white-hot Bruno Walter Mahler - Symphonies Nos 4 & 5 - wonderfully gripping and airy despite its immense age and mono recording, the very Kletzmer-sounding Leonard Bernstein on DGG Mahler: Symphony No.5 and the noble and jovial John Barbirolli on HMV Mahler - Symphony No 5. Each of these discs, in their very different ways, ... Read More:

Rubinstein's hallmark recording of Chopin's Ballards & Scherzos still sounds wonderfully rich and it has timeless quality to inspire both the music and other pianists.

I bought this for my father, who has it on vinyl but no way of playing it. He was most pleased with it and although it's all I remember from my childhood I have let him play it in my presence! A good one for the oldies.
