Having cut numerous massive selling 12" singles with Sly and Robbie ("Leaving To Zion", "General Penitentiary", "Shine Eye Gal") for a variety of labels, Black Uhuru were snapped up by Island and given a contract that allowed them enough studio time to make albums, and sent to work with their favourite ryhthm section. The result was an album that was far ahead of most reggae of its time, and pointed the way towards the emerging digital dancehall sounds, without resorting to the cheap sexism of the "slackness" that so disfigured that music's early years. By the time "Tighten Up" was released in early 1969 (and only operating since July of 1968), Trojan Records of the UK had released a staggering 108 singles and 25 albums to a voracious cosmopolitan British public. But Trojan knew that they needed a way to expand the nation's knowledge of their excellent catalogue, so they hastily put-together this 12-track ragbag of 7" singles as a compilation, priced it cheap (14 schillings and 6 old pence to you pal!), put a lovely fetching cover on it and plopped it into the racks of every Woolworths store across the land. All great artists generally leave enough material for a posthumous album of some sorts, generally a pork scratching type affair which rarely adds anything to the existing cannon. I think the opposite is true here and that this is greatest of the three albums that The Mescaleros recorded and possibly better than anything Joe recorded with The Clash. I think that taking Joe out of mixing/mastering stages has left his band to complete the album without Joe vetoing anything that he might think commercial and as a consequence I think this is the most immediate album in Joe's cannon. Festival anthem `Coma Girl' is the strongest opening song any album could hope for and the pace doesn't settle down through the pseudo religious `Get Down Moses', prophetic cowboy song ... I bought this album because I love the track "Tea". It's only 40 seconds but the damn song has been in my head and I had to crumble and buy the album. It's excellent. Her range is great, the songs are neither pop nor country nor middle of the road, but timeless soul and blues. I first had this album on cassette back in 1990, but lost it. Now I have it again on CD, and it all comes rushing back. I love the irresistible angst of the eponymous track "Stop" and the infectiously catchy "Piece of My Luck". Strangely, even the sleeve design hasn't dated- I really love the black dress she wears in the sleeve notes. Also, just for good measure, the lyrics are there too just to help closet singalongaSam fans like me.
