before they settled into a blander niche, ub40 were a mighty british reggae band with the avowed intention of bringing dub into the charts and the mainstream. how they succeeded! tyler, king, food for thought and burden of shame were heartfelt political statements of their time set to infectious grooves,weird echoey dubs and ali`s unique vocals. the standout track has to be "madam medusa" which is the finest anti-thatcher record ever(they encored with it at glastonbury 1983 a few days after the tories election victory, introducing it as more relevant than ever), almost 13 minutes long with one of the longest and most atmospheric dubs ever committed to record- simply outstanding and worth the price of the cd on it`s own. signing off is simply one of ... Comprising an excellent greatest hits collection with a dvd of live performances and promo videos, this compilation is essential. Unless you're a big fan or completist this package contains everything you could want from The Specials' enduring legacy. Much of their music still sounds vital and contemporary. Along with The Beat's recent 2 cd compilation, You Just Can't Beat It (and maybe The Selecter's greatest hits), you have a capsule history of the late 70s/early 80s ska revival. Recommended.

This is such a classic album, which still sounds fresh 13 years after it was made. It has brilliant basslines, great production and tunes that just stick right in your head. It has a wonderful mix of upbeat folky dub madness like Little Britain and Captain Dread, alongside ambient dub excursions like Shining Light, Cave Of Angels and A Canterbury Tale. These ambient tunes are what really make this album special, taylormade for listening to when out amongst nature like walking in mountains, or sitting round a campfire at dawn. And I never get tired of them. In fact this is a perfect album for anyone who goes travelling to a strange new land, I've listened to it in Morocco and on the Inca Trail in Peru and it just seems to fit those special moments. Probably the best album I own of any genre! It's actually two albums: Marcus Garvey, and Garvey's Ghost, which is a dub remix of Marcus Garvey. It's so good, I can't really think of anything else to say: words don't do it justice!

After the trilogy of Friends albums Jools returned with an album where the style and tone of the music was more suited to the big band sound of his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. I was hoping he reverted to being the main singer but he shares the vocal duties with his regular female vocalists Sam Brown and Ruby Turner with a star turn by Beverly Turner and two with Solomon Burke including his greatest creation `Everybody Needs Somebody to Love'. I think the album works best with the arrangement of the instrumental numbers and the songs which Jools sings but some of the guest vocalists are given sympathetic arrangements particularly Ruby Turners ambitious take on Dylan's `Blowin' in the Wind'. Not a total return to form but still a worthwhile entry ... Read More:
