With 1980's adventurous More Specials the Coventry band overcame the 'difficult second album syndrome', a fate which has befallen many an artist over the years. They did this by broadening their musical palette; where their classic debut (effectively) embraces the ska and reggae of Prince Buster, The Skatalites and Toots and The Maytals, this album sees them venturing into a wider variety of genres, including northern soul (`Sock It To `Em J.B.'), spaghetti westerns soundtracks (`Stereotypes') and easy listening (`Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)'). This album regularly appears in lists of top reggae albums of all time, indicating that compilers of such lists probably don't own enough reggae records. Undoubtedly, the main reason for its acclaim lies with its opener "Police and Thieves", which is indeed a seminal roots masterpiece but it's fair to say that had it not been popularised by the Clash, this album would still be languishing in obscurity. Perry's production is interesting, but it certainly doesn't reach the majestic heights he achieves on the Congos' Heart of the Congos, and many of the songs here are distinctly unspectacular. This Tighten-Up compilation will put a smile on your face this summer, and might even make you think the sun is shining. There is a definite progression to be heard as the tracks draw from the original eight lps in the series. Reggae is still a relatively new concept in the first tracks, having just taken over from the slower rock-steady style in the early sixties. So the first few numbers are very R&B-like. Half way through the first disc the familiar bass thump is there and you know you're not in Kansas anymore. I am a big fan of unlikely Reggae covers and there are some gems here. Its not often that music is made like this - happy and summery. This is a great album to listen to on grey rainy days as the songs will take you away to sunshine and lazy days on the beach. This guy is a genius - buy his album!

I bought this hoping it had some different mixes of the Congos best album, but it seems to have been mastered at a slightly faster speed than the edition on Blood & Fire [which has more & longer tracks]. VP should pay attention to details like that if they want to match the other B&F edition [which also has bonbus tracks included]

If you enjoy Reggie then you would feel that this album would offer you the excellence in Christmas music. It started with dreary renditions of several much loved carols. The casio keyboard music effect did nothing to enhance it. Further along the album at Track 16 there starts to be a big improvement and I would say to buy it for this part alone!

As expected, this compilation is hit and miss. There are some good songs here such as 'Killing Zone' and 'Stranded', taken from the 'Fall Back Down' single, but not really album quality. For me the highlights are the two songs taken from the 'Let me go' single; 'Ben Zanotto' and 'Dead and Gone'. For fans of Matt Freeman and his bass guitar, listen to 'White Knuckle Ride' - the best bass lines featured in any Rancid song. "True" fans won't need this compilation - they will have been hunting down all single releases and vinyl only versions of these songs since 1993. Only buy this if you own every Rancid CD, every side project and Solo CD, and need this to complete your collection.
