On first listen, eveything is here that you expect from a Tracy Chapman album: an obvious sincerity of thought and expression, love and politics and reflections. What makes this album so convincingly good, is the music of the musicians involved. Rob Burger, Carla Kihlstedt and all the others do not deliver some usually well-done studio work, they comment and enrich the songs in very interesting ways. Producer Larry Klein is looking for a different setting for every single track without lacking coherence. it's a flow from start to end. Chapman's singing is more reluctant than before, a win-win-situation for dynamics and colors! So, every song, even the most simple love songs, own their little surprises. This compilation album needs little introduction as it has sold a zillion copies or something ;), and there is a reason for that. Nobody, not even The Beatles have created a finer collection of pop songs. Pop is often sneered at by some hoity toity music lovers, but there is no need. A finely crafted 3 minute pop tune can be just as meaningful and exquisite as any other piece of music. The tunes Bjorn & Benny created will live on forever, and the girls singing stays in your mind so very easily. For me this is not their ultimate collection, as I liked more of the bitter-sweet songs they did like Eagle and The Day Before You Came. But that's a personal preference. I'm married but when we went to see Pink live in Nottingham me and my female friend both walked out and said she could "take" us down the other path if you get my drift (& not married herself). She is an amazing show woman, she's sexy, daring, has an exquisite voice!!! Need I go on!! I've seen the Try This and I'm Not Dead tours live and she just keeps getting better!!! I've only just bought this and the Try This dvd (Jan 08) but I can't wait to watch them!!!! Enjoy!!

the best Xmas cd on the market at present - but not as good as the red cover Best Christmas Album in the World Ever which came out in 1995ish. To be fair this one has virtually everything but misses several key tracks - Shakin Steven's Merry Christmas Everyone, The Pretenders 2000 Mile and the Wham version of Last Christmas. It would be in bad taste for me to complain that theres no Rock and Roll Christmas by Gary Glitter but there you go. Other than these exceptions it has everything.

To me this set of eleven songs seems like This Is The Life - a deserving worldwide hit, with six million YouTube views at the time of writing - and ten charming variations. Collectively, they just about pull their weight, and occasionally get close to genius (e.g. 'Poison Prince', in my humble opinion). I very much hope we will see one or two more big ideas in the second album.

The problem with the Shea Stadium gig was that they were supporting a stadium rock band (The Who) and, thus, concentrated on some of their more audience-friendly tracks. The best live Clash track I have ever heard is Complete Control. Other great lives songs include White Man In Hammersmith Palais, London's Burning and Capital Radio. None of which feature here. Although there are some great Clash songs on here, and some are better than on the second half of From Here To Eternity, this does not represent the best of the Clash live. To get a true picture of what the Clash were like live, you'd probably need the first half of From Here To Eternity, mixed with a random selection of tracks from this CD. Also, I quite like ... i cant believe i hear this album now! having recently bought the brilliant Leaders Of The Free World I wanted to discover Elbow. Then I listened to Cast Of Thousands next which i included in my top 10 album list. but then I listened to this album and I was totally knocked off my feet! I just love it. this is music! reading other reviews I was deeply dissapointed they were compared to other bands. some of the reviews which compare elbow to say coldplay would have put off buying this record. If u like music then get all the albums by Elbow. Another band I thought I should recommend is I Am Kloot.

This, the fourth album proper from the band, starts well with two songs that sound fresh, lively and a little different before normal service is resumed with mixed results. I wish they'd continued with the sunnier upbeat vibe of those opening tracks and made this their summer album (I already see 'Agaetis' as their wet behind the ears Spring album and '( )' their chilly winter disc). When compared to the previous three albums you'd have to conclude that this is the weakest but it is still an enjoyable listen. The next album will be the real test for the band as more of the same might not be enough to keep everyone interested.

Spotted in a bookshop in Bakewell, Derbyshire. There wasn't a "2" was there? So I bought it. And it's hardly been off in the car since. I agree with other reviewers that not every song here is a gem, but the Lucas numbers do have something that stirs the sentiments. (You who said he wasn't a great songwriter, I present exhibit A - "Bring 'em Down" on Fairport 9). It's true though that it's the Denny tracks that really stir the soul. Her remarkable ability to interpret a song never disappoints on this disc. With all the emotion in the vocals, and all the Telecaster Pyrotechnics of the genius Donahue, it's easy to ignore the superb foundation on which this edifice is built. Ok Ok so it's Christmas time again, time for "YET ANOTHER" Rod's Greatest hits collection. Now, please don't get me wrong here, I appreciate that dear old "Rodders" needs lots of money to pay for all those ex wives and kids, but PLEEEEASE give us something fresh!! I must admit that it's my wife that is the Rod fan in our house, and every year she looks out for Rod's latest offering around Christmas time, and lo and behold, this year it's yet another "Greatest hits" compilation.
