I bought this on the strength of customer reviews which made it sound like the kind of music I might like. Wrong. I find the music turgid and monotonous. It is difficult to determine where one track finshes and the next one begins. The strangled warble which passes for vocals is very irritating. It may work as backing music on TV but is does not stand up on its own. Don't be taken in by the Sigor Ros appreciation society (whose entire membership seem to have offered a review here),try before you buy!

As an album that you hear when your parents play it and come back to later to realise it's simply amazing, you can't get much better than this. Leonard Cohen is an amazing man, who has created an amazing number of amazing songs over the year. For me, though, this is his essential album. Partly it's because my parents played it over and over when it first came out, and when I was too young to understand music like this for all its depth. I came back to it about five years ago to find that not only does it contain breathtaking songs, but I didn't have to wait a while to gain familiarity with them. Original, inspirational, beautiful music. The stand-out track for me, Red Socks Pugie, is original songwriting at its best. Listen to it. Buy it.

In a discussion recently I remarked to a friend how Nine Inch Nails are the only band who [in my opinion] have never made a bad album. However, I now take my comment back. While the production of the album is first rate, the songs fall far from the industrial noise come conceptual evolutions that have propelled Trent Reznor through the last decades. The opening track (999,999) gives intriguing promise, only to give way to the disappointing melodic electronica that doesn't subside. There is one diamond in the rough though; The Four of us in Here Are Dying. However this instrumental is not enough to rescue the sinking ship that is 'the slip'. There are too many filler tracks on this album to make it a worthwhile purchase. Perversely, it's one of those tracks - Eagle - that means this collection gets two stars instead of just the one. Stick to "Gold", it's the one with all the cheesey disco on and is all you need.

After reading some mediocre reviews of this album I was shocked when I finally heard it and it turned out that I really enjoyed listening to it. It's clearly a step away from the first album, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. This album has much more of blues, kind of Nashville Skyline-era Bob Dylan, feel to it, and I personally think that their vocals work much better together here, whereas the first album often felt like one or other of the vocal tracks had simply been 'tagged on'. All of the tracks on this album seem to gel together very well, and although there aren't really any stand-out 'single' type tracks, I do not think that this is a bad thing at all.
