Titanic, released in 1997 and winner of eleven Academy Awards and countless other accolades, is a fantastic film and like most fantastic films, it also has an amazing soundtrack to go along with it. However, this one, which was awarded the Oscar for Best Original Score as well as another for Best Original Song - "My Heart Will Go On", performed by Celine Dion - is truly out of this world both in terms of quality and length. It is filled with tremendous orchestral versions of James Horner's magical and enchanting compositions which fit the film perfectly: at times brash, melodramatic and overblown while being subdued, romantic and emotional elsewhere. The original soundtrack was so disappointing as it missed out so much of the music that made the film so great. This album makes up for it: or was it a ploy to sell more cds and make more money? Whatever, its great music.

An excellent re-work of the original Roger & Hammerstein work with stunning performances from the principal artistes. If you enjoy the original soundtrack, you cannot fail to adore this superb re-work.

John Williams (Stars Wars composer) once again demonstrates his ability to create meaningful music which can stand alone from the movie script that inspired it. The CD is beautifully performed and recorded with outstanding instrumental solos from Yo Yo Ma (cello) and Itzhak Perlman (violin). John Williams has created a musical atmosphere which almost imperceptibly evokes the orient without becoming pastiche. What I like particularly is the music's understatement and avoidance of high drama relying instead on a gently changing, orchestral landscape to convey subtle changes of mood. A CD which would be worth buying for the haunting Sayuri's theme which opens and closes the score. But there is much more here than 'one good tune'.

"Appropriate" is the word best suited to James Horner's composition for this big hit movie. The music caught my attention mid-way through the movie as events started to go dreadfully wrong for the troubled mathematical genius. Up until this point it was typical enough of the gendre. This change in tone is the "secret weapon" within, conveying the slow disintegration of the protagonist's mind. What follows from tracks 6 to 10 is, for all intents and purposes, the same tune rearranged in many different ways. It is extremely menacing, allowing us to feel the pain of one man's inability to grasp reality. If you think about it, a soundtrack ought really to reflect and enhance the tone and texture of a movie. It shouldn't be about taking songs of the moment from bands of the moment. Too often that seems to be the case, and the soundtrack album lacks any form of unity or cohesion. It is often the case that the songs on the album never even featured in the movie. But not in this case, oh no! I don't think I have ever encountered a movie and soundtrack which are so inseparable. Somehow atmospheric and sentimental, while menacing and industrial at the same time, the soundtrack almost eclipses the movie. It certainly encapsulates it. It is impossible to watch the movie, without hearing the songs - and they really are a great bunch ... Read More:
