Don't be put off by the first two tracks. This complilation is a must have for any true fan of '60s soul music. The album kicks into life with track three, the stomping 'Tell daddy', and there's little let up until the maudlin, over sentimental, but never-the-less absolute classic and must for any stag night (it was for mine anyway!) 'Patches'. Did Carter have a sense of humour, or was he another badly used artist? It certainly seems ironic and very non-PC these days for a blind artist to sing songs such as 'I can't see myself' and 'I'd rather go blind', but sing them he does. Carter's lacivicious chuckle is to heard on numerous tracks, so I'd like to think that the album is a mark of Carter's humour. Listen to that chuckle on 'Back Door Santa'. ... Read More:

In June 2007 my wife and i took a little trip to Memphis , just for the fun of it and to visit all the usual tourist attractions .Thoroughly enjoyed it too and what made it even better was when , on the last day of the trip , i strolled into Memphis Music on Beale Street and heard an absolutely beautiful voice singing about " A Nickel and a Nail " , well i had to ask the guy in the shop who was that fantastic singer and , yes , it was this man , O.V. Wright . Well ! What a revelation . Friends , i bought that CD straight away and it's utterly classic . A real gem and one of the greatest Southern Soul records i've ever heard . And here it is , 8 Men , 4 Women by the man himself . It's superb , so buy it . What's really needed now is a new compilation ... Read More:

Superdude 1 must be one of the great all time SOUL albums of the early 70's, and I could never understand why it didn't get a reissue on CD. I had it on vinyl all those years ago and it is as good as I remember it. For deep soul, take in Leave Him, Checkin Out and Somebody.... and there's funk and some almost Northern tracks too Do yourself and favour and BUY IT NOW
