Music : The Complete Stax-Volt Soul Singles, Vol. 3: 1972-1975
Stax were one of the pre-eminent Soul labels, and while comparisons with Motown are obvious, there are significant differences. Stax was started by a White couple, Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton (hence Stax from the first 2 letters of each surname) and while it enjoyed it's reputation as the home of Southern Soul, and hence Black music, it was essentially a multi racial operation. In addition it did not distribute it's output, pre 1968. Motown was entirely Black owned and operated it's own distribution, with Berry Gordy controlling everything - and that means everything.

Stax entered 1972 after enduring a traumatic period since 1968, when it was discovered they had no rights to the material that Atlantic had distributed for them. ... Read More:

This late album by the great Stax Records house band is a fine addition to their majestic catalogue.
