Ladies and Gentlemen,
Do not be lead astray by other reviews, follow the colonel in these troubling times of modern music. I am a humble man, I couldn't run a marathon, and I couldn't get a university degree. But I know about Music. The Dynamic Duo, that is Sam and Dave is beyond Music, this album is the epitomy of what is great about Soul and ultimately what is incredible about these two high Calibre individuals. This Album, whether played on the bus on the way to work, or blasted from the rooftops of an urban jungle, is a lifestyle that is as infectious and powerful as anythiung ever encountered by man. It will change your life and let you see through these troubling times. Buy the Album, Listen to the Music, Hear the Music, Love ... Read More:

Arthur Alexander ,had one of the most emotive voices in American music ,his legacy however is a handfull of c.d,s and 4 long out of print albums (two of which Ace issued and make up much ofthis superb compilation cd).If you love your soul honest without gimmicks with a twist of country ,your gonna love this set! He was never truly appreciated in his time but maybe with c.d,s like this one ,he may just finally get his due.

One of the finest CD compilations of 60's soul music you're going to find - a great mixture of better and lesser known tunes, but all killa and no filla. Complement this with the 'Stax Gold' CD for the stuff from '68 and beyond and you've got the start of one seriously soulful collection ! Does exactly what it says on the tin - if this lot doesn't move your soul, book an appointment with your GP.

"Harlem Sessions" sounds like your favorite mix tape you made many years ago; the one that you keep playing over and over because it has all your favorite, desert-island songs. It's a groovilicious compilation of killer soul cuts from the 1970s, with blaxploitation films as the main theme. Of course, you can't realistically include EVERY great soul joint from the 1970s on two CDs, but this compilation does a great job trying. A collection of this nature has some of the usual cast of characters like Curtis Mayfield ("Superfly" and "Little Child Running Wild" from his must-have soundtrack to "Superfly") and Isaac Hayes ("Shaft"), but we also get unexpected nuggets from Cuban jazz legend Mongo Santamaria ("We Got Latin Soul"), Gil Scott-Heron's "The Bottle," Shirley ... As a "child of the sixties" I was slightly aware of Solomon Burke via two early Rolling Stone covers and a hideous version of Dylan's Maggie's Farm (regularly voted one of the worst Dylan covers ever made I understand and thankfully not on this collection!).

As a Mojo magazine reader I was aware that his latest CD "Don't give up on me" was Mojo's Album of the Year in 2002, so when I saw he was coming to London to appear at the Mojo Festival at the RFH in January I took a chance.

Suffice to say the show was so great (closest to a 60s Soul Review since I saw Ike & Tina Turner Revue in the early 1970s)that I wanted to rehear many of the early songs he performed that night in their original form and so immediately bought this Rhino re-issue ... Read More:

As the 70's dawned, much was changing in R&B and Soul. Amongst other things, the 3 minute single formula which suited radio plays was being challenged as artists focused on producing albums and both of the dominant Black music labels (Motown and Stax) had experienced upheaval.

Into this world dropped "Lets Stay Together", with it's Southern Soul roots well in evidence, but with signposts to Al Green's later status as a Soul superstar. Al Green had found his feet as another Sam Cooke or Otis Redding, but once he had hit his stride with this album, there was no looking back for him, or for Hi records, which would become a Memphis powerhouse.

Al was responsible for writing or co-writing 7 of the 9 tracks, including the title track, which was ... Read More:

The selling point for this comp are the breaks contained therein which have been ransacked by various Hip Hop artists. But ignore that and listen to these for what they are, essential jazz, funk and soul from 70's Black America just as juicy now as when they came off the press and at a ludicrously cheap price.

This may not be worthy of 4 stars but its nearer that than 3 for me. These guys were the backing band in the sixties for the Stax/Volt labels. Most of the records you hear by Otis Redding, Sam & Dave etc had these guys playing, and theres a good reason for that, they are very good musicians.

Everybody knows 'Green Onions', it remains a classic instrumental, apparently made-up in the studio. The cover of 'I Got A Woman' motors along, propelled by some infectious drumming from Al Jackson. A change of pace for track 6 gives the guys to show off their blues playing on 'Behave Yourself'. This is a lovely slow blues, which builds up a head of steam and gives Booker T a chance to show off his Hammond playing.

Their are really only two reasons ... Read More:
