Music : Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul
HISTORY:
With the groundwork of his first two albums behind him, "Pain In My Heart" in 1964 and "The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads" in early 1965, Otis Redding stepped into the Stax recording studio on McLemore Avenue in Memphis on the 9th of July 1965 to quickly slap down his 3rd album. And quick was the optional word. In one long adrenalin fuelled session (broken up by night gigs the band had to attend - only to reconvene in the early hours of the morning), its 11 songs took less than 24 hours to produce. In fact, Otis flew out of Memphis the very next day to do another gig! It is of course now recongnised as a bona-fide 60ts soul classic and this "Collector's Edition" is here to celebrate that.

This is a better album than Nashville, or maybe that's mainly because I am currently playing this one all the time, especially the title track, which, although sung with restraint, conveys all the emotional intensity you could want - this shows off Soloman's voice 'par excellence'. The other track I particularly like is 'stepchild', again, very restrained.
The other thing is , if you ever get the chance to listen to Soloman Burke's version of 'gotta get some more money',( if I find out what album it's on I'll flag it up - watch this space ) don't hesitate - it's amazing, and being that bit younger he is able to showcase his vocal power ( although to be honest it hasn't suffered too much from him being now in his 60's on the album being ... This album is an amazing piece of soul artwork. Millie Jackson's vocals and the orchestral arrangements are a delight to the ears. Muscle Shoals have a lot to answer for when it comes to sending R&B music lovers into rapture. Just consider another outstanding genius (Bobby Womack) and his association with Muscle Shoals. I was truley blessed in being able to witness this album in its original era as a teenager. Almost every track on this album is sensual, deep and meaningful. When I play this album in my own privacy it is like recieving a musical massage. Musicians and vocalist who bring us such pleasures such as this album deserve great rewards. True R&B lovers please buy this album, you will guard it with your life.

34.The Best Sixties Album in the World...Ever Vol.1 by: Various Artists

Music : The Best Sixties Album in the World...Ever Vol.1
I regard this as the best series of sixties compilations yet released on CD. Even with 200 tracks between four volumes, it would have been easy to continue the series. On compilations like this, I particularly look for classic tracks by artists who only had one or two big hits. Of course, most of the major names are here although you won't find Elvis, the Beatles or the Rolling Stones here due to licensing restrictions.

On this volume, I was particularly pleased to find Rescue me (Fontella Bass) as I already had many of the other tracks elsewhere, but there are so many classics here that I never tire of hearing including Flowers in the rain (Move), Waterloo sunset (Kinks), Downtown (Petula Clark), The sun ain't gonna shine any more (Walker brothers), ... 37.His Hands by: Candi Staton

Music : His Hands
A great smouldering southern soul album. I hope this is the first of many more as the voice is still in great form - I was just waiting for Candi to break out and really go for it but perhaps that's wishful thinking. Nevertheless a wonderful nightime kind of album.

Well worth buying.

By the time Aretha released "Young Gifted and Black" in 1972, she had proved that she could bounce back from something of a commercial slump, with her triumphant live concerts in San Francisco (Feb 1971), which resulted in a hugely succesful live album. Some of the songs here had been recorded well before those live dates, with Aretha going back into the studio shortly afterwards to complete the album. Looking back over her career, this period can be seen as possibly Aretha's most creative - she is clearly at her peak, both interpreting other's material and writing her own songs.

Aretha had produced an anthem for Black pride with "Respect", and she revisited that theme with the title track, a gospel infused rendition of Nina Simone's composition, and there ... Read More:

This delightful collection of some of Candi Staton’s best includes deep soul ballads like Here I Am Again, As Long As He Takes Care Of Home and He’s Making Love To You, plus soulful disco like When You Wake Up Tomorrow and Victim, a dancefloor classic that reappears as a new remix every few years. Her greatest hit, Young Hearts Run Free, is a classic pop number with amazing lyrical depth and a wonderful melody. But my favourite here is Honest I Do Love You, a brilliantly arranged slow disco number with beautiful lines like” “I’ve been humming for days/Melodies, some you’ve never heard”. The omission of her Bee Gees composed hit Nights On Broadway is strange, but overall, this album is a great introduction to the work of Staton. It ... Read More:
