'Live at Filmore West' is an amazing double album showcasing Aretha's awesome live talent. The first disc is the original album in remastered format and the second disc has alternate takes and unused songs from the concerts. The choice of songs are perfect, 'Love The One You're With' is especially note-worthy, and Ray Charles duets with Aretha on 'Spirit In The Dark (Reprise)' which reaches almost gospel revival proportions. The audience atmosphere can clearly be heard and adds to the overall ambiance and feel of the album. When Aretha speaks with the audience it reminds me of Jill Scott today when she talks with real soul to her audiences (I highly recommend her albums by the way). I used to count myself as a hardcore Neil Young fan,but over the last 5 to 10 years I've had to reassess that.It seems the real hardcore fans have taken over the reviews on amazon as even very poor ones like this get 4 stars.They should back off and try to assess him a little more objectively,because his output has always been very variable and it does no one any favours if they just indulge in blatant a*se licking. THIS ALBUM By any standards is actually worse than Greendale,an intermittently crap album,and Prairie Wind,which is so crap it's the last NY album I shall ever buy.I've always liked his guitar playing,but too often his lyrics are embarrassingly sophomoric and despite his now slavish following,because of albums like Living With War ... As Otis Redding's individual albums go, this disc is one of the best, second only to the excellent "Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul." Over half of the tracks are Redding originals, including the funky "I'm Sick Y'All" and "Sweet Lorene," the wonderful "Ton of Joy," and "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)," which Otis said was inspired by the theme from the TV game show, "The $64,000 Question." The usual handful of cover tunes are exceptional as well, such as the memorable renditions of "Try A Little Tenderness" and "Tennessee Waltz." Two great tracks had already been hit singles when the album came out - Think, which had been recorded on 15 April 1968, the day Martin Luther King was assassinated; and her fantastic re-interpretation of Burt Bacharach's I Say A Little Prayer, which she and the Sweet Inspirations had apparently worked up while on tour, just for fun. In America I Say A Little Prayer was buried as a flipside before discerning deejays turned it over, but it had been the bona-fide A-side the month before in the UK where it reached number 4. Although only a short album in length, this is brilliant southern soul. From the vitality of the title track to the brooding, emotional I'm a Lonely Stranger, Arthur Conley presents some truly fantastic music. Arthur Conley was discovered by the great Otis Redding and this debut album was in fact produced by Otis and featured some Otis tracks. There is not a bad song on this album and all soul fans should have it in their collection. Stand out tracks include There's a Place For Us, the pop-soul of I'm Gonna Forget About You and the anthemic Sweet Soul Music.

Not as well known as a couple of her other Atlantic albums this is nevertheless fantastic stuff. Dark End of The Street, Son of a Preacher Man...you won't be disappointed by choosing this one.

He may not have been the most prominent soul singer of the 1960s and 70s but Percy Sledge had a distinctive country soul or southern soul style and a pleading voice with spiritual undertones. He made a lovely, flowing type of R&B with his stirring vocals and exceptionally melodious songs like the timeless When A Man Loves A Woman, Dark End Of The Street, Take Time To Know Her and Out Of Left Field. This is authentic music from the heart, full of yearning and romanticism expressed in gripping imagery. The backing is similar to the sound of the great Stax artists, and his voice is often framed by lovely female vocals. Most people these days will come to this album through the classic opening sequence of cult movie 'Withnail & I' where the eponymous 'I', Marwood played by Paul McGann, draws heavily on a cigarette as he stares into space through red eyes. King Curtis magnum opus 'A whiter shade of pale' plays over the opening credits and you feel the track was created for this moment. This legendary album recorded in San Fransisco's Fillmore West in 1969 was Kc's last album before his unfortunate demise. With a tight backing band which includes honorary Beatle, Billy Preston on keyboards,then at the height of his fame...think 'Get Back' in 69..the band rocks and the vibe is not unlike that created by The Blues Brothers.
