I didn't think it would be possible for Mr Godin to match let alone improve on the brilliance of Volume 3, but incredibly he's done it again and surpassed his previous releases. Everything here sits so well together,an absolute joy from track 1 to track 25. Gems such as My Baby by Garnett Mimms and The day after Forever by Paul Kelly are personal favourites, but that does not detract from the quality of product here. One thing puzzles though: why on earth was 'You Make Me Feel Good'by Lawrence & Jaibi shelved in 1970? What a stunner!. The usual great liner notes are here, including a marvellous soul epiphany from Kevin McCardle. Buy it today.

I came to this as someone with a single CD compilation of Aretha, of which the contents were very fine but the mastering not, wanting to hear more in better quality. And boy did I get it... A lot of (nearly all?) box sets contain far more of the artist or genre covered than anyone but a fanatic/trainspotter could possibly need, let alone listen to regularly. This quite fundamentally isn't one of them. It's almost universally (and rightly) accepted that Aretha Franklin's best work was recorded during the period she was signed to Atlantic (1967-1979) and this box covers that period, though it peters out before the end - there is nothing on here from her last two Atlantic albums. I bought this album mainly for "The Champ", but was very pleasantly surprised by the many other gems on here, and the consistency of quality across all the tracks. Highly recommended - one of the best compilations I own. King Curtis's Memphis Soul Stew is top notch, as is the The Noble Knights' version of Sing a Simple Song. Buy it!

I bought this album mainly for "The Champ", but was very pleasantly surprised by the many other gems on here, and the consistency of quality across all the tracks. Highly recommended - one of the best compilations I own. King Curtis's Memphis Soul Stew is top notch, as is the The Noble Knights' version of Sing a Simple Song. Buy it!

The biggest compliment I can pay to this compilation is that it is right up there with what I consider the gold standard for funk compilations that is the ones released on Jazzman, ie Mid West Funk etc......This is very good indeed brothers and sisters.

Solomon Burke's latest CD is a personal and understated if not sparse affair. For most of his career the man from Philadelphia has been switching between country and soul, often choosing songs from the (white) country tradition but singing them with (black) preacher type phrasing. Until recently Burke's accompaniment also stuck to traditional soul patterns. Nothing wrong with that! Now, once again, there is not a sax or trumpet in sight. If anything this CD is even more introspective than its predecessor. Is it good? Yes, but I'm beginning to believe it's not as good as the three preceding ones, Don't give up on Me, Make do with what you've got and Nashville. I've been looking for a Booker T & The MG's compilation but couldn't decide which as they seemed to focus on either early or later recordings. This one compiled by Elvis Costello is a blinder. Even the best Hammond organ players can sometimes sound a little "end of the pier" but these selections are great and the live "Green Onions" is well worth choosing over the studio version. The other live track "Bootleg" also steams along but there is a good mix of tempo across all tracks. Great sound and highly recommended.
