Millie Jackson's Caught Up duo, had brought her fame and fortune and she revisited the concept a couple of years later. The tracks here are less of a story though, so it's more of a collection of tracks on a theme than a true concept.

There are, however, some standout tracks with Millie in her usual fiery form on tracks like "You Created a Monster" and "Angel In Your Arms". There are more reflective tracks, on Feelin' Like A Woman" Millie quietly celebrates her independance, while "Back In Love By Monday" stands comparison with anything she has ever done.

Whilst , personally, I prefer the previous 2 albums, this remains a testament to a Soul songstress at the top of her game, and rightly gets a reissue, with 3 alternative ... Read More:

How do you separate Aretha's Atlantic albums from the late 60's to the mid 70's? Each has it's own classic tracks, each it's hidden gems and always that superb voice, soaring from a whisper to a scream with no apparent effort.

Aretha was the acknowledged Queen of Soul, and built on her reputation with this combination of original tracks and interpretations of familiar material. The latter is well represented by "Natural Woman" (Carole King), "Money Won't Change You", here merely uptempo, rather than JBs frenetic original, and a sublime "People Get Ready", which I am sure Curtis would have appreciated.

For original material, the anthem of the hopelessly in love, "Chain of Fools" and the bluesy "Good To Me..." stand out, ... Read More:

If Fats Domino carried New Orleans through the 50s then it was Allen Toussaint in the next 2 decades.Today he's on tour with Elvis Costello who he cut his last album with a mighty long way down the road from the days of Ernie K-Doe and the Stokes and the times he stood in for Fats Domino on a new single because he was on the road and which was the start of his recording career when he had to learn how to impersonate the Fat Man
He was on a roll even when interupted by the Army-Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass had just cut Whipped Cream -covered from his own original by his group the Stokes.Another easy listening act cut a version of Java and Toussaint had an album of his own music under the name of Al Toussan.
Returning to New Orleans he carried ... Read More:

Well, I am not one to knock the Mersey Boom, like punk it washed away some very manufactured music, but like all storms it took some good with the bad. The New York Soul scene in '62, '63 was producing some of the finest music ever made, not least in the combination of the Reverend Solomon Burke and the irreverent Bert Berns - who saw the Beatles produce the definitive version of his classic 'Twist and Out'.

So here it is, the best of a great combination, plenty of it, very reasonably priced. There are many many compilations calling themselves the greatest hits of Solomon, he did fine music after leaving Atlantic, and continues to record with commercial success and critical acclaim to this day. Yet this is the business, he has never overcome ... Read More:

Millie Jackson's finest achievement was this 1974 release of cuts covering the tale of a woman's existence as a mistress, told mostly from her point of view. As another reviewer has said, the "poor old me, the "other Woman"" role begins to grate at times, but only very slightly. This is peerless soul music, especially the wonderful "If Loving You Is Wrong" with its segue into the "rap" bit, spoken over a big "phat" bass line. All through the backing music is excellent and Jackson's vocals are always right up there. Unlike many "concept albums", the theme continues all the way to the end, when an inspired choice of cover version in Bobby Goldsboro's "Summer (The First Time)" sees the album's protagonist mournfully looking back on the good times and realising ... The Atlantic R&B Platinum Collection has a real variety of sounds. You could buy them all have have hours of pleasure. If you're only thinking of buying the odd one then go for this one. It takes me back to the late 60s and mohair suits and Lambrettas! Some of the songs are obvious faves that get the feet tapping and gives you a big smile. What "Soul Finger" followed by the magnificent Aretha with "Baby I love you" then "Chain of Fools". Its also great to hear 2 stunning Clarence Carter tracks again. Having played it loads of times I really look forward to hearing three longer, lesser well-played tracks that are at the end of the disc. "The Ghetto" from Donny Hathaway was really ground breaking at the time and holds up well. Then there is Tyrone Davis at his best ... Read More:

O V Wright would not normally be one of the first names mentioned in any debate on the greatest of all soul singers but he is surely up there with them all. Originally signed to the legendary Memphis label Goldwax, Wright was found to have a prior contract with Duke Robey's Peacock and was 'persuaded' by Robey to cut his ties with Goldwax. This did him no harm however as he proceded to record some of soul music's finest sides. Backed by a classic organ dominated rhythm the gospel trained Wright laid down some of the most impassioned vocals in the entire soul canon. Cuts such as A Nickel And A Nail and Id Rather Be Blind Crippled And Crazy testify to this most gifted of singers. By all accounts O V was a difficult and troubled man and died prematurely in 1980. Simply fantastic, tracks 1 - 19 range from very good to brilliant. Tracks 20 & 21 are from his recording days at 'Epic' and are average at best.
(I've given it 5 Stars because R.H was a genius, really its 4.5 stars)
