Music : God Hates Us All: Collector's Edition
It has to be tough for slayer. This is the band who defined what a certain brand of metal sounded like, even what it could sound like. Reign in Blood was the record I wanted to hear in 1986. It was the yard stick by which I measured not just metal, but all extreme/noise music. I spent years trying to find another record that would give me that same hit. Now here is that record.

Nothing inbetween has offered that same visceral brutality. Like Reign in Blood this is an album that takes my breath away, I find myself listening to a track, then replaying it, just to relive the sensation. It somehow leaves me feeling clean, in the same way that you feel purged after a fist fight, not clever, but in touch with something elemental.

A lot of early Helloween fans don't like this second generation of Helloween, mainly because the change of singer and they can't feel as attached to the band they first got into.

However all that aside this album is fantastic. After the disappointing Pink Bubbles and Chameleon the band really are on top form again. They really benefit from the song writing abilities and playing of the 2 new members, Andi Deris on Vocals and Uli Kusch (My favourite Drummer) on drums.

The songs themselves have a really upbeat attitude to them (well mostly) and has sleeve notes and a new part to the Keeper story. I feel this is because the band feel that they are back to their keeper standards.

Unfortunately this album isn't as good as Keeper ... Read More:

134.Volume 8: The Threat Is Real by: Anthrax

Music : Volume 8: The Threat Is Real
This is certainly an album that splits the vote. The only certainty is that it's the one that crept under the radar; the early Anthrax material is very well known; Persistence of Time, Stomp 442 and Sound of White Noise signalled a revival in musical respect after the excesses of image that rather overshadowed their efforts in the late 80's. But "Threat"? Off the radar.

When I bought this way back in 98, it was almost under duress. I quit Anthrax along with Belladonna, viewing the whole thrash scene as tired, derivative and dominated by growlers. Boring. A friend of mine raved about the record, so I bought it eventually, slapped it on, and was hooked - maybe not from "Crush", which is a respectable opening but nothing outstanding; maybe not from ... 135.Cryptic Writings by: Megadeth

Megadeth rules! This album proved that they can mix metal with pop. There are many classic songs like "Trust", "She-Wolf", "Almost Honest", "Sin", and "Use the Man".

The funny thing about this compilation is that many of the songs (except the covers) are better than a lot of Megadeth's album-based material and ironically, tracks like "Go To Hell" and "Diadems" (which are among Megadeth's best songs) were doomed for inclusion on dreck such as Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, and the crappy Tales From The Crypt movie Demon Night. Who'd have though Megadeth would end up providing material for the Mario Bros. film? Yuck.

137.Words from the Exit Wound by: Napalm Death

Music : Words from the Exit Wound
It's pretty much common knowledge that Napalm Death went through something of a slump during the latter half of their time on Earache records, but 'Words From The Exit Wound' - their 8th and final studio album for Earache, sees the first glimmerings of a return to form. Granted, there is still rather too much emphasis on bouncy mid-pace groovy death metal fillers, but the album also features some immense riffs, and is practically worth the price for the opening three songs. Napalm Death wouldn't really rediscover their form until next album 'Enemy of the Music Business', but 'Words From the Exit Wound' is still a good solid album, and the best thing the Napalm boys had released for some years at this point.

This album is almost impossible to get a hold of these days but if you can, do so. It is quite simply wonderful. The vocals are so pure and soar to the heavens. To single out any track is unfair on the rest but Long Long Ago and The Water Is Wide are my favourites. I do not collect this sort of music normally but the first time I heard this it stopped me in my tracks (forgive the pun!). Why Chameleon did not go on to make further albums and become more well known, I am not sure but they should be proud of making one of the finest harmonic vocal albums of the last thirty plus years.

In order to review this album one must put it in its musical context. The year is 1884, Venom have released "Black Metal", Hellhammer had run their course and Celtic Frost had emerged to replace them, the ground work was being laid for extreme metal of the future. There was, at this point, no distinction made between black, death and speed, all these names were interchangeable. As yet, Sweden had no place in this growing phenomenon, enter Quorthon. After reading satanic comics in his teens, listening to British "oi" punk and (although he denies it) listening to Venom, he created a primitive style of metal not unlike Venom, but not a clone of them either. More overtly Satanic than anything to come before it, more genuine than Venom ever dared to be, this album still stands out even today, ... Read More:
