141.Diatribes [CASSETTE] by: Napalm Death

Music : Diatribes [CASSETTE]
Napalm's previous album `Fear Emptiness Despair' had already shown the writing on the wall, with the band cutting out huge swathes of their usual manic grindcore style for mid-tempo grooves. With `Diatribes' Napalm take the process a stage further - this album is virtually devoid of the high-speed blastbeats that made the bands name, with the emphasis now on catchy grooves. On the plus side the album does boast a better production than `Fear Emptiness Despair' and the more simplistic song-writing does make this a more catchy proposition. The band must also be applauded for it's willingness to experiment, with speaking (and at times almost rapping) vocals and some Godflesh-style moody slower songs. Ultimately however what seemed cutting edge ... Read More:

I'm simply amazed that Jason Newsted is bankrolling Voivod with his Metallicash. It's a pity that this CD, while being excellent metal, does not contain songs as anywhere near as strong as the outstanding "Nothingface".

143.Human by: Death

Music : Human
Human marked the start, for me, of Death's proper technical death metal birth.
It has some fantastic riffs, and some of the most amazing bass "pops" from long time Sadus wizard Steve Digorgio. His bass playing is almost funky in its rhythm and timing. You can be listening to Chuck bawling his lungs out and on the occassional pause for breath there is a cool twang or two inserted in to the gap to keep you interested and motivated to listen further.
The best track on the album for me is "Lack of Comprehension" with its wierd synth intro, that rips into a riff to die for and some mean as hell growling. its a real gem and deserves to be called one of the stand out tracks of Death's whole catalogue.
I saw them at the Astoria around 1994/5 and ... Read More:

When considering the absolutely staggering metal masterpieces Mercyful Fate put out in the 80's most of the later output can be considered a bit disappointing, `Dead Again' is no exception to this. Rather than breathtaking and revolutionary such as `Melissa' or `Don't Break the Oath' `Dead Again' seems like a tired band trotting out the same formula...lacking the vitality of those seminal early works.

It seems that during the period in which King Diamond chose to keep both Mercyful Fate and King Diamond active the quality of the albums really suffered. You can seldom find a bad review of either bands stagnant late 90's output. Shame really as its probably misled some innocent metalhead's into buying some stinkers.

147.Chameleon by: Helloween

Music : Chameleon
This album is almost impossible to get a hold of these days but if you can, do so. It is quite simply wonderful. The vocals are so pure and soar to the heavens. To single out any track is unfair on the rest but Long Long Ago and The Water Is Wide are my favourites. I do not collect this sort of music normally but the first time I heard this it stopped me in my tracks (forgive the pun!). Why Chameleon did not go on to make further albums and become more well known, I am not sure but they should be proud of making one of the finest harmonic vocal albums of the last thirty plus years.

148.The BBC Radio 1 Sessions by: Napalm Death

Music : The BBC Radio 1 Sessions
The disc is composed of 16 tracks from 4 different sessions. 3 of the sessions come from the legendary John Peel (RIP) shows and the other from the Radio 1 Friday Night Rock Show.

Tracks 1-4 were recorded under the third incarnation of Napalm Death line-ups (there have been 7 in total!) of Mick Harris (Vocals/Drums), Shane Embury (Bass), Bill Steer (Guitar) and Lee Dorrian on lead vocals, in September 1987. The highlight of these 4 tracks for me is track 4 - a combination of Obstinate Direction, Life, and You Suffer. This album brings back so many great memories - I remember putting this on in the 6th Form lounge back at my old school! I think it only lasted for the first 2 tracks as people had had enough of the heavy stuff and put back on their Craig David and rubbish like ... Read More:

150.Fistful of Metal/Armed and Dangerous by: Anthrax
October 01, 1999
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : Fistful of Metal/Armed and Dangerous
So, this is where it started for Anthrax. This album features the original singer who isn't bad at all - so don't let that put you off. Sure, this isn't their best album, but it contains all the ingredients that made Anthrax great. It's by far their fastest album, but there are moments where the pace slows down. The lyrics are intentionally cheesy and probably the funniest of all the Anthrax lyrics. There are plenty of worthy songs on here, don't start off here, but if you're looking for thrash you should probably get this before their Bush era stuff. The Armed and dangerous E.P. has Joey singing and features some great songs which are unavailable elsewhere (except AAD itself).
