191.Catastrophe Ballet by: Christian Death

Music : Catastrophe Ballet
I am one of a minority of Christian Death fans - meaning I much prefer Valor's Christian Death to Rozz Williams'. Both these artists feature on this release, since it is the last album before Valor took over the band completely.
I find Rozz's vocals strained and monotonous, and the production sounds too smooth, dated, very 'eighties'. Fortunately for Valor fans like myself, with every release since, Christian Death has become harder, heavier - less 'eighties' goth and edgier, darker metal. This is not the album to go for if you are wondering what this band is all about... only if you want to know what it WAS like.
In my opinion, any budding Christian Death listener should first acquire Valor's "Sexy Death God" and compare ... Read More:

192.Roots Bloody Roots [CD 1] by: Sepultura

Music : Roots Bloody Roots [CD 1]
This is a single of, by far, the best track on the album "Roots". It's extremely heavy and if you are a metal fan you should own this, if not buy it now!!! (You'd be insane not to!). The music, although heavy-metal, has a hint of Sepultura's Southern American roots which mixes very well with the heaviness of the guitars and the bass of the song. The lyrics are very political and come across very strong with Max Cavalera's harsh shouting. To put it bluntly, you must own this CD now!

193.Hell Awaits by: Slayer

...And its called "Hell Awaits", lasts 37 minutes and 12 seconds and was the moment Slayer found their own unique sound with out having to rely on any NWOBHM or early thrash fore-runners to inspire them to write tunes.
It leaves show No Mercy behind, with is lighter riffs and anthemic lyrics, and just blasts out dark noise of ill intent.
The production is a bit poor like just about everyone agrees, and it could have had a better mix (epsecially the drums, which if you turn it up loud enough, are bloody awesome !!)
Slayer are obviously famous for (amongst other things) Reign in Blood. The Daddy of Thrash metal, and one of the most inspiring records in the death metal fraternity. Hell Awaits is like the trailer, the "warm up gig" ... Read More:

I didn't like 'The Human Factor' so was glad when this came out,if you liked 'Blessing In Disguise' you will definatley like this too.
It has much better production, this time alot clearer which helps with carrying the songs.
I feel they had lost their thrashy roots and kind of went a bit like Metallica's 'Load' only before them anmd doing it far far better,if you like 'Load' and 'Re-Load' and Corrosion of Conformity you will probably like this too.
There's some great riffing going on and some great tunes such as 'The Gods Of Second chance','Losers In The Game','Waiting For a Saviour','Down To The River' it makes this a worthwhile purchase,if you get the digi-pack you get some bonus live tracks, one of the churches 3 ... Read More:

This might have been a surprise to most in 1994 due to the previous albums progressively becoming more epic and slower. I was marginally disappointed at the time because I felt Quorthon had already accomplished what he needed in this area but the fact is there is some very good and powerful material on here. The guitar work is good but in my opinion what let the album down was the drum sound, which appears artificial and doesn't blend with the general sound. The other thing against the album is that some of this material could have been developed further to create something more than just hard thrash, for example there was plenty of speed and power on Blood Fire Death but the songs often went through tempo changes and various evolutionary phases, ... As a fairly new S.O.A.D. fan, i find this single has a more relaxed beat than most of their previous songs but it is still enjoyable. With its interesting lyrics and live versions of Toxicity and P.L.U.C.K this is a must have single for any true System of a Down fan.

And on par with their 3 predecessors; it contains elements of the 3 of them, retaining the speed, agression and their hardcorish thrash/speed-metal signature sound. Their first after a 4 year hiatus and the departure of their famous drummer Dave Lombardo now incorporating the competent Paul Bostaph. Problem is the band were moved from one studio to another( to a total of 4) so production is quite inconsistent but once you're familiar with the record it starts kicking ..ss bigtime.
