I'm a fan of John Adams, and was lucky enough to buy the boxed set when I saw it going for a song (sic). Most of the music is excellent, with some real gems, and only one dud. I'm currently listening to El Dorado, and had forgotten what a marvel it is. For me the stinker is "I was looking at the ceiling ...". That piece is more like a musical than an opera, and for me it fails completely and at times is embarrassing. I had the complete recording, and gave it away to a friend who liked it. The excerpts from Death of Klinghoffer and Nikon in China are both excellent. I also have the full version of Nikon and it is one of my favourite pieces of music. Adams's music is very American, having the open light feel that is present from Copeland onwards, ... Read More:

I heard some of this on the radio (BBC Radio 3, if you must know) while I was having a lie-in, and I just couldn't stop smiling. The Happy Birthday variations are just superb fun and worth the price on their own - I especially recommend the Tango and the Csardas for anyone looking to be cheered up. All the other stuff on the disk is fine too. I hope the musicians had as much fun making this as I do listening to it, time after time.

I cannot believe this doesn`t have a review. Who am I to give a review of this and Menhuin? It`s either Jascha Heifetz or Menhuin that seem to top the best 20th Violinist on record and this is Menhuin whose legendary recordings and interpretation of Bach is set out here for one to listen to online! Suberb. Be careful...LISTEN CAREFULLY.....don`t be a victim of 21st C post modern cerebral whitewashing and be in orbit to the shallow.. and don`t be swayed too much by the cleaner digital recording of 21st C interpretations. THIS is real class.. and it is a good quality recording from EMI as you would expect. Alot of music here as well for your money. This HAS to be a treasured collection for anybody. Seriously good stuff. It speaks for itself. I couldn`t ... Read More:

109.Brahms - Violin Concerto; Schumann - Fantasie,Op 131 from: Deutsche Grammophon
November 10, 1997
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Brahms - Violin Concerto; Schumann - Fantasie,Op 131
This recording is among the greatest you can get. The Brahms is superb. The inclusion of the Schumann Fantasie is perfect. So good it moved me to tears of joy for the accomplishments of those involved. A real treat when you need one. This is what classical music is all about. You will feel alright in this family atmosphere. Anne-Sophie Mutter is truly as brilliant as any other violinist alive today, possibly even the finest.

Mozart, of course, is probably the archetypal musical prodigy, paraded around Europe, playing, improvising and composing from the ridiculously early age of about four. It used to be thought that Leopold might have done much of his son's early composing, as well as his publicity, but it's clear that even infantile Mozart is streets ahead of his father - witness the latter's supremely facile 'Toy Symphony'.

Easier to overlook are the prodigious talents of Franz Schubert. It is astonishing to think that so accomplished a work as 'The Trout' was written when he was a mere 22. It was commissioned by the amateur cellist Sylvester Paumgartner, who had been so impressed by the song of the same name that he asked Schubert for a set of variations ... Read More:
