This is not a bad package for the price, but buyers should be aware that Karajan did some of these works better at other times.

For example note that these are the 1960s recordings of the last three symphonies (unlike the DG Double set which are the 1970s recordings). For the Pathetique this means you get by common consent the best of Karajan's many recordings of this works - fine playing, with spontaneity and freshness and excellent recording for 1964.

However in the case of the Fifth, the later BPO DG recording, or even better the wonderfully spontaneous 1971 EMI Berlin recording are preferable (the latter quite superb in phenomenal sound, rivalling George Szell's 1959 version in sweep and power). This 1960s Fifth ... Read More:

On one fairly mediocre Saturday in May, having had the pleasure of spending the morning attending the rehearsal of Sir Charles Mackerras, I wander backstage and gradually begin to hear a beautifully faint virtuosic melody filtering through the thin corridors. A minute or two later, after curiously hanging around the vicinity of the guilty dressing room, I see two familiar faces appear, one with a baton and a score, another with a rather attractive violin.

The first face was no surprise to me: he was the whole reason why I had stayed that afternoon. The second, however, suddenly had the presence to raise my heartbeat two-fold it seemed, not because of a small heart attack, but because this friendly individual was arguably the most famous ... This CD is remarkable. Four pieces are Tavener at his usual best, with harmonious apparently simple flowing sounds, melodies isn't quite right, as his music is more than melody - more like gentle fluid harmony.

I have to admit that I have a different aspect here, and this is that I love Sappho nearly as much as I love Tavener. So imagine my disappointment when my favourite composer set my favourite poet and the result is, to my ear, discordant and screechy. I fully admit that I probably don't understand what Tavener is getting at, and I will keep listening until either I understand or come to the conclusion that I will never understand, but such initial disappointment was painful.

The rest of the music on this CD is ... Read More:

This is a superb CD - showing off Purcell's marvellous diverse talent for composing superb music for all occasions - the first part is celebratory, with bright voices at a lively pace. The second part is music for Queen Mary's funeral and is contemplative, solemn and majestic. I loved it - as I love all Purcell music. Glad to hear Classics FM play him more nowadays - previously hardly ever. Anyone who enjoys music by Handel will enjoy this.

This is a most enjoyable recording (made in 1980). The performance by Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields led by Neville Marriner, at the peak of their powers, is very stylish and the tempi are well judged.

Some world-famous soloists participate - Henryk Szeryng (violin), Michala Petri (recorder), Jean-Pierre Rampal (flute) and Heinz Holliger (oboe).

There are many "period performance" recordings of this work by now, some of which are good. However, when you listen to a performance using modern instruments like this one under review, I wonder if period performance enthusiasts (including myself) are missing something important for the sake of pursuing "authenticity". Here in this performance, there are no problems of edgy tones ... Read More:

I love this CD. The music is so different (if you're not used to Klezmer music), intense and passionate. Plus you have Itzhak Pearlman, one the world's greatest violinists, and the Israel philharmonic. A stunning combination. If you're prepared to take a risk, take a risk on this. You shouldn't be disappointed.
