141.Benjamin Britten: The Rarities by: Pears/Britten/Ellis/Rostropovich

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Benjamin Britten: The Rarities

The real treasure on this 2CD collection is undoubtedly the first recorded performance of the canticle, Abraham & Isaac. The reason it was unpublished does not reflect too well on the composer. Having written the piece for Kathleen Ferrier (ah, now, if only she had recorded it!), her tragically early death meant that Britten and Pears had to search out an alternative. Their choice lighted on Norma Procter and she gives a truly inspired performance partnering Pears, scaling down her voice to suit the young boy, yet singing with heart-breaking intensity. Sadly Britten's eye then lighted on a delectable young choirboy with whom he and Pears subsequently recorded the piece, only informing Procter after the event. One can imagine her disappointment. ... I recently listened to the music on the box set being played by the London Royal philharmonic orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall in London and immediately loved the music and bought the c.d box set. All the themes from the films are played brilliantly with a real joyous sound to them. The themes that I had seen the films to I think I enjoyed the most as I already new them yet hearing them being played by such a good orchestra really makes the c.d worth listening to. There is not a single bad track on the c.d and one of my particular favourites was 'the great escape' which really made me smile. This album is a must buy for anyone who enjoys film theme tunes or anyone who likes listening to an orchestra as talented as this. 5 stars!

This CD gleams like a hard clear gem with the dark light of memory and loss. It is entirely unsentimental and speaks volumes to the heart of what I imagine it might feel like to be English -- not in Edwardian England or after the First World War, but in the 21st Century.

I have lived in the UK long enough to remember an England that has long passed -- of bustling yet friendly village post offices and cozy and slightly tatty tea shops, smiling and buxom elderly ladies in aprons, and warm and genuine pride in labour and industry. It is not so much these images that fill the music but a powerful sense of their irretrievable loss -- and the loss of so much more besides. I used to listen to this CD on Sunday afternoons in Oxford as an American ... Read More:

I was surprised to be somewhat disappointed by this CD, having become a rather avid fan of Manze's playing! On this CD I find his virtuoso playing far too extravagant and frenzied in many places, almost czarda-like - other parts are hauntingly beautiful and show great sensitivity. I do love the harpsichord accompaniments, which really come into their own in this recording and compliment the violin, whereas so often the harpsichord can be overshadowed by other instruments. I wonder if I would have enjoyed one of the other two recordings of these sonatas better?

This is a re-recording of both works for Chung, who gained depth in her interpretations since the late 1980s, and it is a stunning success! She plays the Beethoven with more naturalness and depth than in her 1979 recording with the Vienna Phil and Kondrashin. It is simply gorgeous playing and one does hear the typical Chung fire in the playing as well, so the warmth is an added bonus. I love her playing of the last movement, where she seems to be in touch with God almost, in her playing of the last half of the movement. It is deeply spiritual, and I couldn't imagine a more spiritual reading of this work. The Bruch is also much more natural and warm. I love her first recording with Rudolf Kempe, but this one's even better, in my opinion. This is a recording which ... Read More:

Everything here is of the highest level of excellence. Oistrakh was the complete violinist - technically impeccable, capable of great beauty of phrasing and tone, subtly colouring and shading the music, and with a fine sense of line and structure. It's all here in these classic performances from 1954 to 1962. My own preferences are for the Brahms and Tchaikovsky on the second CD, but the Bach, which has stood in the catalogue ever since it was released, I think, is excellent and the Beethoven likewise. The sound is fine and the performances are well supported by the various orchestras and conductors.

In addition to the wonderful songs and the reconstructed concerto (with its perfect slow movement) this disc also contains superb performances of both the Prelude and the Romance for string orchestra.

The only problem with this recording will be stopping listening to it.
