This EMI re-issue is a great buy for lovers of the cello, and represents Rosto at his best, whether in the warm piece by Dutilleux or the more challenging (i.e., unhummable) Lutoslawski composition. Also a great introduction to two composers relatively unknown (and unjustly so) to the general listening public.

Music : Rostropovich and Britten Recital
I have well over 2000 CDs and this is simply one of my most treasured. I never tire of listening to it. I originally bought it for the Schubert but discovered that the performances of the Schumann and Debussy are wonderful too. An irreplacable record of two great musicians together.

This is a fine specimen of what duo-playing can and should be. My pleasure in this record is in no small measure down to my enthusiasm for these particular works, among the most attractive and significant products of early romanticism. Chopin's cello sonata seems to me an even better work than his piano sonatas. None other than Tovey gives it high marks for construction, even forgetting for once to include his near-invariable reference to Beethoven as the benchmark in all such matters. Chopin had written for the cello in his early years, and the opus 3 introduction-and-polonaise is included here, but the sonata has a sheer self-assurance about that sounds as if he had been composing for it all his life. There is even a full-scale slow movement - not ... Read More:

This disc contains outstanding performances of two pivotal works by John Adams.

In Shaker Loops which was created between 1978 and 1983 we find Adams using the techniques of minimalism, but he is already stretching them to their limits as he seeks to hold a vivid lyricism and strong dynamics within them.

In the Violin Concerto of 1993 Adams creates a new synthesis of musical means: of baroque, classical, romantic, early modern and post modern forms and techniques. The overall effect is close to that of music the early 20th century, but it also sounds completely up to date. With the almost continous musical line for the violin that runs through the work their are parallels with Szymanowski's First Violin Concerto. In the second ... Read More:
