This is one of Anne Sophie Mutter's finest CDs and includes possibly the greatest interpretations of Sarasate's "Zigunerweisen" and Tartini's "Devil's Trill" to be heard. Mutter's incredible passion and dazzling virtuosity bring this music to life in a way no other violinist has achieved. From the very first note she commands your attention as she communicates the full range of human emotion through some of the most beautiful melodies composed. Her pianisimos in the Massenet Meditation and the Faure Berceuse are so exquisitely delicate they take your breath away.

I haven't found a dud amongst the Naxos Vivaldi issues yet. This CD is the fourth and final in a complete set of the Cello Concerti. Far from being a dud, this CD, and its companion volumes are as ideal as you are ever likely to find. The all English personnel, recorded in a London church in 1994, ensure that nobody need bother to duplicate these works in any future recording. As for the concerti themselves, they are all in three movements and come in at under ten minutes each. Those familiar with "The Four Seasons" will know what to expect. All seem fresh, interesting and appealing. The A Minor, RV 420, differs from the regular quick-slow-quick movement pattern, having an andante first movement. The wonder is how Vivaldi, ... The musicianship of the soloists and orchestra are first rate on every disc [there are 5 of them]. You may consider the D'Oyly Carte recordings to be definitive because they were mainly recorded after a lengthy run of stage performances, but when you have Royal Opera House soloists being accompanied by a top class orchestra and chorus, you really can't go far wrong.
