Ralph Vaughn Williams music is centred in the very heart of the English character. If you can experience the presents of England in the works then you have felt your home. And known the love for its great past without regreting its loss of greatness.

In my opinion it is very difficult to identify one version of a work as great as this . Different interpretations can tell you so much more about a work .

That said this marvellous recording from the early 1980s was my introduction to a 25 year long love affair with this piece . Perlman spins tone of gold whilst also allowing introspection in the slow movement .

That said I wouldn't be without Menuhin/Furtwangler on Testament, Oistrakh/Cluytens on EMI or Hilary Hahn on Sony either

I already had Milstein's recording of the Mendelssohn, Bruch and Tchaikovsky concertos and was looking to buy a recording of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas. I had heard alot of good things about his Bach recordings and after having been blown away by his Mendelssohn, decided to go for this recording. Nothing could have possibly prepared me for what can only be described as some of the most breathtaking performances I have ever heard. This man deserves so much more recognition than he currently gets.

He puts the music first in these recordings, like he always did, with none of the egotistical interpretations that many of the other great violinists seem to display. He plays them with an immense amount of passion and love for the music, portraying ... Read More:

Of all Elgar recordings by Du Pre, this live recording is no doubt the most deeply moving one. The slow movement is probably the slowest interpretation, yet it never loses tension as she gives everything to express the heart-breakingly poignant Elgarian longing. Despite the almost fierce outpouring of emotion, this performance never gives an impression of vulgar sentimentalism, as the sheer depth of music making transcends everything else!

Barenboim's account of Enigma is equally great recording. No over-emotionality here, yet full of grace, magical moments and noble beauty presented in Wagnerian grandeur. The famous Nimrod is played most beautifully.

To accompany Vikram Seth's novel 'An Equal Music' - this two-CD set of nearly two and a half hours, is exquisite even if the book doesn't appear on your bookshelf!
Seth himself has chosen the performances and the playing is breath-taking!
Included is Schubert's, 'Trout', which whisks me back to first year in secondary school and the end of year production - real nostalgia.
Vaughan Williams/The Lark Ascending - captivating!

Certainly a worthy investment and a lovely way to spend a summer's evening with a glass, or two, of chilled white wine!

It is difficult to know what to add to the many useful and intelligent reviews already posted on Amazon, but anyone who owns this recording feels the compulsion to share his enthusiasm with other music lovers. While other cellists - particulalry Casals and Fournier - have made indispensable records of their interpretation of these sublime suites, only this one offers everything you would require in a performance: full, deep recorded sound with the slight resonance and aura around it which the Burgundian gothic cathedral of Vezelay provided (Slava chose this venue particularly for its rich acoustic); flawless playing by perhaps the greatest cellist ever; wonderfully illuminating notes which both enhance your understanding of the music and also of how Rostropovich ... While there are some lovely pieces of music on these CDs they don't match the titles. When I bought this 2-set CD I thought that maybe I had received Vol2. or something by mistake as none of the tracks match the information on the CD insert. I decided to check by listening to the samples here on Amazon & discovered that they too are incorrect. Just to ensure I wasn't going mad I found the CD set on a US website and listened to their samples & they were correct!!! I wish someone could explain.

What a wonderful collection this is. Anyone with any taste whatsoever in classical music (and plenty who don't) will realise when they listen to this that it is truely a masterpiece. The title track (Danse Macabre) is probably best known (in the UK at least) for being the title music to the BBC series "Jonathan Creek", and has also been featured in an episode of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", showing that it has an ability to grip and excite even those with no classical interest. This collection makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up, it has that kind of power.

If you buy any classical album ever, this would be a fantastic choice - I can not praise this work high enough.

Whether you are primarily interested in the concerto or not this is a beautiful addition to any collection. The recording and playing is wonderful. The Scottish Fantasia might be regarded as the lesser piece but is my favourite. I have played it many times whilst visiting Scotland and sitting beside the river Gary immersed in the beauty of the music and the place. I highly recommend both.
