191.Nathan Milstein by: Nathan Milstein

Music : Nathan Milstein
The performances on this DVD are mostly fairly old, all in black and white (if I remember correctly) and it would be fair to call them classic archive material. Milstein was an absolutely commanding violinist and here his playing is totally absorbing. Some performances were recorded in France before a young audience and occasionally the camera cuts away to them ; they are absolutely focused, and the playing is so marvellous and so musical that it is easy to imagine how mesmeric it must have been live. But we can still see them through this wonderful DVD, and that is a blessing indeed.

Music : The Yellow Guide to Classical Music
DG have come up with truly the best compilation of popular classical pieces. The performances, such as that of Haydn's Emperor Quartet and Rossini's William Tell Overture, are excellent. The booklet which comes with this CD is extremely informative and gives details of every track on the CD and of 100 composers.... I would definitely recommend this CD, especially to those who are looking for a new collection of different pieces. Forget 'The Best... in the world ever' - they're not nearly as good as this CD!

Music by Messiaen well placed to convince sceptics or those who want to dip their feet before plunging into the heavyweight masterworks. The Concerto for Four is very late Messiaen and has him thinking back to the work of earlier French masters. The concerto has greater mobility and transparency than other pieces that stand like great trees populated by every shouting bird under the sun. The references to other composers reminded me of Shostakovich and the Fifteenth Symphony. This, combined with the earlier pieces and Messiaen's Mozartian 'smile', make for sunnier listening than usual. More relaxing, although it has to be said, Les Offrandes and Le Tombeau contain passages of considerable intensity and tragedy that pack quite a punch. These ... Read More:

Excellent interpretations as you would expect from Barenboim (on the piano) and Du Pre (on the cello). The sound quality in the cello concerto is a bit boxy. Apart from that this is a very good coupling of Schumann pieces, especially since it breaks the mould of always coupling the Schumann and Grieg piano concertos.
